Not every U.S. citizen is a well seasoned traveler that knows everything they need to know in order to travel outside the US. As silly as it may sound, they may find themselves wondering what a passport is.
A passport is a travel document that is normally required to travel from one country to another. A U.S. Passport comes in the form of a small booklet. A passport serves many functions; the obvious is that it allows you to travel to different countries, U.S. passport holders may travel to several other countries without needing further documentation. A passport also serves as proof of citizenship. A person holding a valid U.S. passport is internationally considered a U.S. citizen.
Another form or identification that can be used for traveling to another country is a passport card. Passport cards were first available in the summer of 2008. A passport card is a wallet sized, much like a driver’s license, which can be used to travel from the US to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land and sea only. The passport card is most convenient for US citizens who live close to the US border with Mexico or Canada and who travel frequently between these two countries, by land or sea. Passport cards may never be used for air travel.
A question that even a US Passport holder may ask themselves is; how long is a US passport valid for? The answer depends on the Passport holder’s age. An adult US passport for individuals 16 and older is valid for 10 years. Children 15 and under must renew their passports every 5 years.

A US passport is a very powerful tool. Many US citizens take getting a passport for granted. According to the most recent studies, just 30% of US citizens hold valid passports. Even though 70% of US citizens do not take advantage of getting a US passport, it seems that several people who are not US citizens have gotten US passports through fraudulent activities. Most recently it was discovered that a well respected police officer in Alaska known as Rafael Espinoza held a fraudulent passport.
As it turns out, authorities discovered that the person posing as Rafael Espinoza was really Mexican citizen Rafael Mora-Lopez. Mora-Lopez, as it turns out, was in the US illegally and he stole Espinoza’s identity. By using Espinoza’s identity, he Mora-Lopez was able to get a US passport.
Mora-Lopez went on to become a respected police officer in Anchorage Alaska. The passport fraud was discovered when Mora-Lopez applied for a passport renewal. It was during the time that the passport agents were processing the passport renewal request that the passport fraud was discovered.
Mora-Lopez appeared in court in Anchorage and pled not guilty to the charge of passport fraud. Passport fraud carries a maximum 10-year sentence.
It turns out that Mora-Lopez had been an Anchorage police officer for the past 6 years and his passport fraud had gone undetected. The real Rafael Espinoza is a US citizen who is still living.
In the meantime, Mora-Lopez was released on $50,000 bond and he was ordered to home-confinement and electronic monitoring.
This particular passport fraud case has similarities to a 2007 case in which a Mexican citizen took his deceased cousin’s identity to become a US citizen. He also became a police officer, but in Milwaukee. The man who perpetrated the passport fraud in that case, Oscar Ayala-Cornejo, was deported back to Mexico.

Expired passport? Lost passport? You’re not alone. According to a UK passport study, it turns out that 1 out of 10 British travelers have previously planned or attempted to travel abroad with an expired passport. Incidentally, if your passport is expired, then you will be considered ineligible to travel abroad.
An expired passport can ruin a vacation, can be a disaster to a business trip and can prevent travel abroad. However, in a passport emergency, it is still possible to get a passport – even on the same day. Passport expediting services are available to travelers who have lost their passports, had their passports stolen, have expired passports and a host of other reasons. The UK study also shows that 24% of UK passport holders thought you could travel using your passport right up until the date which it expires. This, by the way, is not always the case as tourists often need up to 6 months remaining on their passports when traveling to some destinations.
The UK passport survey also discovered that almost 10% of UK travelers had their travel plans affected by an expired passport. Believe it or not, 13% of UK passport holders thought that they didn’t need a passport to travel within Europe. 3% of UK passport holders actually thought that a passport was not necessary to travel to the United States.

Do you have a valid US passport? Do you know where your US passport is? Identity theft is on the rise and it is important to protect your US passport. Recently in San Juan, Puerto Rico a citizen national of the Dominican Republic was arrested after U.S. Customs and Border Protection caught him trying to use the passport of a US Citizen.
Illegal use of a US passport is a felony charge under Title 18, United States Code; Section 1524; false statement in application and use of a US passport.
The person allegedly arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico after using a US passport that did not belong to him to board a Jet Blue Airways flight from the Dominican Republic. He allegedly presented a US passport that did not belong to him and told US Customs that he was returning as a United States citizen.
The man reportedly presented a US Passport under a different name. After showing the US passport, when pressed by Border Patrol for additional identification he allegedly provided a Massachusetts ID card and a Puerto Rico birth certificate.
After inconsistencies and further questioning, the man reportedly admitted his true identity and admitted using a US passport that belonged to somebody else. He also allegedly admitted that he obtained the passport fraudulently.
Every day, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers look out for people who possess fraudulent or invalid passports. If convicted, the man can be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in jail for using the fraudulent US passport.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been all over the news as of late. His website exposes secret documents and he has caused a lot of trouble by releasing sensitive documents that some say has jeopardized global security.
Regardless of whether or not you support Julian Assange’s quest to reveal global secrets, there is one person who has the power to cancel Assange’s Australian passport. Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd is the man who holds the fate of Assange’s passport. There are laws that protect a person’s legal right to hold a valid passport.
Not only is Assange being permitted to keep his passport, but Mr. Rudd also says that he will provide a laptop computer to Mr. Assange so that the WikiLeaks founder can prepare himself to face the London court where he is scheduled to appear.
Australian Attorney General Robert McClelland feels that Mr. Assange should have his passport cancelled, but the decision lies with Foreign Minister Mr. Rudd.
Mr. Rudd was quoted as telling the Australian that “Under law, I’m responsible for the Passports Act, therefore the decisions concerning the withdrawal or otherwise of passports rests exclusively with the foreign minister based on the advice of the relevant agencies.”
While WikiLeaks founder Assange waits in jail, the Australian Federal Police are investigating whether or not Mr. Assange has broken the law. This process is expected to take quite some time.
McClelland said that last week the government had considered cancelling Mr Assange’s passport, but they decided that Assange is entitled to the support any Australian citizen overseas would receive. Therefore they refused to cancel his passport.
Assange’s opponents feel that his passport should be cancelled due to the serious nature of the leaks and the threat to the workings of international diplomacy.
Proponents of Assange feel that his passport should not be cancelled and that the Australian government has overreacted to the leaks. They feel that Assange should not be treated as a criminal.

As long as Hilton doesn’t lose her passport, she plans to return to Japan soon. Time will only tell if Paris Hilton will get that elusive Japanese stamp in her passport book.
Paris Hilton ran into trouble gaining entry to Japan. This time reason is not due to a lost passport, nor was her passport stolen – unlike her friend Lindsay Lohan who had passport problems of her own. Instead, Paris Hilton is being denied entry to Japan due to her recent drug charges and sentence.
If you remember, as reported in a previous Rush Passport blog entry from May 28, 2010 – Paris Hilton, forgot her passport on the way to Cannes! By the time she realized that she didn’t have her passport she was already in Madrid.
This time, Paris Hilton had her passport in hand, but she was denied entry at Tokyo’s airport. Hilton was scheduled to appear in Tokyo to promote her new fashion line – but her appearance was cancelled. Not only didn’t Hilton get that Japanese stamp in her passport book, but instead she was forced to return home to the US.
In the past, other celebrities holding valid passports that were also refused entry to Japan for problems with the law include Beatle Paul McCartney and Argentinean soccer star Diego Maradona.
Although the terms of her sentence did not restrict travel overseas, Japanese passport authorities refused Paris Hilton entry.
As long as Hilton doesn’t lose her passport, she plans to return to Japan soon. Time will only tell if Paris Hilton will get that elusive Japanese stamp in her passport book.
