Two Israeli Knesset Members Forced to Give Up US Passports: Rush Passport NYC

Friday, March 15th, 2013

There are people all over the world who have the privilege of holding passports from two different countries.  While there are situations in which second passports are legal, there are some instances in which second passports are not permitted.

Recently, two newly elected members of the Israeli Knesset had to relinquish their foreign passports in order to accept their roles in the government.  Dov Lipman and Naftali Bennett surrendered their U.S. passports following the protocol to become members of Israel’s Knesset.

Lipman held dual citizen and it was a difficult move to make as he was born and raised in the United States.  For Lipman, while it was necessary, it wasn’t easy to give up his US passport.  Lipman was emotional as he discussed the difficulty in surrendering his US passport.

For Bennett, although he was born in Israel, it was also difficult to give up his US passport.  Both Bennett and Lipman are proud to be able to serve in the Knesset.  However, they are both upset about being forced to give up their US passports.

Many Americans have ties to other countries, usually the countries from which they migrated to the United States.  Whether they themselves came to America, their parents, or even their grandparents, there is a certain pride that lies with their countries of origin.  Even those who have assimilated into American culture still hold a special place for the countries of their ancestors.

For Lipman and Bennett, America is that special place.

Rush Passport US Passport CardDo you have a passport?  If you do, that’s great.  But if you don’t have a passport yet, why not?  Did you ever think about traveling overseas?  Did you ever wonder what it would be like to take a trip abroad?  Did you know that even if you want to travel to Canada or to Mexico that your regular driver’s license won’t work?  You can use your US passport, but there is something else that you can use to travel to Canada or Mexico.  It’s called a Passport Card.

The US Passport Card is a less expensive and more portable way to travel.  While the US passport card does not have all of the benefits of the traditional passport book, the passport still allows US citizens an alternative to the US passport.  The US passport card allows citizens of the United States to enter or re-enter the United States from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

If you are planning a trip to Cancun, Nova Scotia, a cruise to the Caribbean or a flight to Bermuda, be sure to apply for your US passport or your US passport card.

Olympian With No Passport or Country Competes in London: Rush Passport NYC

Sunday, July 22nd, 2012

In a previous Rush Passport™ blog article, the passport story of Amaechi Morton, an Olympic hurdler competing for Nigeria, was told.  The focus of today’s passport blog is on Guor Marial, a marathon runner born in what is now the Republic of South Sudan.

Marial is scheduled to run in the 2012 Olympics in London, however he will not be wearing any country’s flag – instead he will be running under the Olympic flag.

Marial lives and works in the United States and is an Iowa University chemistry graduate.  However, he cannot represent the US in the Olympics because he is not a full US citizen and does not have a US passport.

Gurial, who works with people with mental disabilities, fled to the US in the midst of Sudan’s 20 year civil war.  The war led to a peace arrangement that allowed the southern part of the country to secede.  While South Sudan is currently a member of the United Nations, the country has yet to form a National Olympic Committee.  This means that South Sudan cannot send athletes to the 2012 Olympic Games.

The Sudanese team invited Marial to join their team, but he refused due to the fact that he lost many members of his family and over two million countrymen in the war.

Marial gained refugee status to stay in the Unites States because of the danger presented to him by the country of Sudan.  To compete for Sudan in the Olympics would not be acceptable.

Marial is set to be 1 of 4 independent competitors at the 2012 London Games.  The other three athletes are from the Netherlands Antilles.

I guess he will be using his Sudanese passport to make the trip to London.  It may be a matter of time before Marial gets his US passport.

Cryptocat Creator’s Passport Confiscated: Rush Passport NYC

Sunday, June 10th, 2012

cryptocat passportHave you heard of “Cryptocat”?  If not, you probably will be hearing about it soon.  Cryptocat is a web-based program that allows users to communicate and share files over a secure, encrypted chat session that is not subject to commercial or government surveillance.

It was created by Nadim Kobeissi.  According to his Wikipedia page, Kobeissi was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1990 and lists his occupation as “computer security specialist, freedom of information activist”.

You may not have heard of Kobeissi or Cryptocat.  However, according to cryptocat founder, Nadim Kobeissi, US border patrol confiscated his passport.  The founder claims that he has used his passport to travel from Canada to the United States 4 times in the past three weeks.  The last time that he used his passport, he says that he was interrogated by US border patrol and his passport was confiscated.

Kobeissi has been on US radar for a while as a person of interest with regard to internet security and according to his Wikipedia page, “In 2012, the FBI attempted to entrap Kobeissi using Sabu – an American hacker involved with Lulzsec, an offshoot of Anonymous – as an undercover informant.”  That story is also backed up by a NY Times article.

Kobeissi cannot understand why his passport would be confiscated.  He sees Cryptocat as an application that “can save lives, because during the tense moments of the Arab Spring the sources of certain instant messages and other online communications were tracked down and killed for their political views and organizational skills.”

While Kobeissi admits that Cryptocat can be used for bad as well as good, he thinks its worth the risk.  “It’s like if someone says ‘Hamburgers: they can be used to feed the good and they can be used to feed the Taliban. I guess that means we should get rid of hamburgers then.’ It bothers me that we’re so afraid that our freedom will be used against us that we’re willing to just give it up.”

I don’t know whether or not you’re convinced by his hamburger analogy, but it seems that Kobeissi’s decision to use his passport is under scrutiny.

Kobeissi is not the only computer developer who has been detained by US customs.  Last year a bitcoin developer using his passport to travel from China to the United States was questioned for hours by US Customs agents and then denied entry into the United States.

Football Hooligans Must Surrender Their Passports: Rush Passport NYC

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

Passport NYCWell, it’s that time of year again when violent soccer fans, known as “FOOTBALL hooligans” have to surrender their passports.  It seems that more than 100 of these “hooligans” from Staffordshire and Cheshire have received letters from the police instructing them to surrender their passports.

The hooligans have been ordered to surrender their passports so that they cannot attend the Euro 2012 soccer tournament.  If they do not comply with the request to surrender their passports by May 30th, 2012, they will be arrested.

The reason that police have requested that the “FOOTBALL hooligans” surrender their passports is to prevent them from traveling to Poland and Ukraine for the Euro 2012 soccer tournament.  These hooligans have all had football-related offenses in the past.

The hooligans will get their passports back after the final match on July 1st, 2012.

Progress has been made in keeping the matches safe for the fans and the hooligan element ruins the time for fans who come to watch the game in peace.

In addition fans have been warned that if they get into trouble in Poland or the Ukraine, they will be banned from future events and they will receive letters asking them to surrender their passports.

There are over 2,000 people in the UK that have football banning orders and all of them have been requested to surrender their passports.  They all will be prevented from leaving the country for the duration of Euro 2012.

In addition, anyone else who gets a banning order between now and the Euro 2012 tournament will be ordered to surrender their passports as well.

Passport Fee Increases: Rush Passport NYC

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Do you know how much US citizenship is worth?  While priceless to some, there are some US citizens who would like to renounce their US citizenship.  The cost is $450.

Recently, new consular fees were published in the Federal Register.  One of the fees that went up was the fee for processing the formal renunciation of US citizenship.  Prior to the new fees, there was no cost affiliated with renouncing one’s US citizenship.  Now, the fee is $450.

There is no cost for US citizenship when it comes to people born in the United States.  However to renounce the citizenship, the price is $450.

In addition to the fee increase for renouncing one’s US citizenship, the passport application fee is also going to increase.

The cost of a passport application is increasing from $55 to $70 with an increase of $20 to $40 for a passport security surcharge.

There is also an increase to adding new passport pages.  It used to be free to add more pages to your passport.  Now, the US Department of State will now charge $82.  The cost is supposed to be to offset the time that it takes time to print and affix the additional pages into the passport book, passport endorsement and quality control.

The cost to register the overseas birth of an American child is going up from $65 to $100.

In addition, the cost of getting a document notarized at a US embassy abroad is also set to increase.  In the past, the fee was $30 per page and it will go up to $50 per page.

If you need more pages in your passport, a visa, an expedited passport, emergency passport, passport renewal, same day passport, US Passport book, US Passport Card, passport photos or other passport services, be sure to contact Rush Passport™. US Passport Fraud Report: Operation Death Match

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Secure PassportThe US Department of State launched the “zero tolerance” passport program 4 years ago in an effort to combat passport fraud.  Passports are vital travel documents and the US Department of State puts forth great efforts to make sure that passport fraud is approached with a tough strategy.

People wishing to obtain fraudulent passports sometimes use the names of people who are recently deceased – especially young children.  Several passport offenders have been caught this year thanks to the efforts of the US Department of State’s “Operation Death Match” passport initiative.

Passport fraud can happen in several ways.  Passport offenders often take the identity of others and use counterfeit government identification documents.

It is important for US passport holders to keep their US passports safe.  The most basic form of passport backup is to make photocopies of your passport before travel.  Leave one passport photocopy at home and take another passport photocopy with you on your trip.

If you need an expedited passport, emergency passport, same day passport, US Passport book, US Passport Card, passport photos or other passport services, be sure to contact Rush Passport™.
