Passports are not as popular with US citizens as people expect. The latest US passport statistics have been released and surprisingly enough, just 30% of US citizens are US passport holders. Are you shocked by the number of Americans without US passports? How many Americans actually have a passport? Which states have the highest ratio of citizens that are US passport holders? Do states on or close to the coast tend to have higher ratios of citizens to US passports than land locked states?
Yes, its true. States that are either on, or close to the coasts have a tendency to feature the highest percentage of citizens holding US passports. The top states with the highest ratios valid US of citizens to passports are California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Delaware. All of these states feature over 60% of the citizens with US passports. Do you know which state has the overall highest ratio of citizens to passports? If you guessed New York, you’re wrong. If you think California has the highest passport to citizen ratio, then you are wrong again. It’s not Massachusetts either. Nor is Delaware the leader in passport ratio. Yup, you guessed it, New Jersey is the winner with over 68% of its citizens holding valid US passports.

Most US citizens do not have a US passport and most US citizens do not travel abroad. Approximately 30 percent of Americans hold a valid passport. The Swiss Federal Office of Statistics recently released data reporting that the arrivals of Americans in Switzerland increased by 11.5% in 2010. US passport holders also spent almost 9% more nights in Swiss Hotels in 2010.

Swiss Statistics report that the surge in arrivals of US travelers since the end of 2009 through 2010 is unprecedented.

US passports are not hard to come by if you are a US citizen. However people who attempt to obtain fake US passports better think twice. The US Department of State has made it a top priority to catch people attempting to use fraudulent US passport. During a two-day passport sting operation at the Calexico port of entry, twelve people were arrested for using fraudulently obtained or altered U.S. passports or visas during a two-day operation at the Calexico port of entry recently.
A US passport does a lot more than allow you to cross the border. A US passport enables people to live in America, enables individuals to have access to certain benefits and it allows people to cross the border at will.
The passport sting operation known as “Operation Linebacker,” took place February 1st and 2nd with the cooperation of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California. The passport operation landed five valid U.S. passports and seven fraudulent passports. The passport imposters could face up to ten years in prison.
Customs and Border Protection officers deal with passport fraud on a daily basis. Thousands of fraudulent US passports are confiscated each year.
Most fraudulent US passports are lost or stolen and then sold on the black market. US passports or visas that has been reported stolen or lost should send a red flag to passport officials. Confiscating passports at the border prevents the passport imposter from using the valid US passport to obtain other vital documents such as birth certificates and drivers licenses.

US passport holders should always check the US Department of State website to find out about the latest Travel Alerts and Travel Warnings.
Travel Alerts are issued as a precaution to US passport holders for short-term events that they think you should know about when planning travel to a particular country. Some examples of travel alerts that have been issued to US passport holders in the past include a contested election, times that may feature demonstrations or disturbances, health alerts / outbreaks or elevated risk of terrorist attacks. Travel alerts are cancelled when these short term events are over and US passport holders may resume normal travel.
Travel warnings are issues to US passport holders as a strong message to avoid traveling to a particular country at all. Reasons why US passport holders should be very concerned include an unstable government, war, serious ongoing crime or violence, or terrorist attacks. Some travel warnings may be in effect for years.
There is currently a travel warning in place for Egypt. US passport holders are advised not to travel to Egypt at this time. The U.S. Department of State also ordered the departure of all non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members from Egypt.
US passport holders in Egypt are urged to remain indoors during curfew hours. U.S. passport holders are also urged to avoid all demonstrations in Egypt. US passport holders are advised that even peaceful demonstrations can become violent quickly.

The following is a Rush Passport™ passport reminder: As mentioned in a previous Rush Passport™ passport blog, as of October 30, 2010 the US Department of State will no longer accept Puerto Rican birth certificates that were issued prior to July 1, 2010 as a primary proof of US citizenship when applying for a US passport book or US passport card. The Government of Puerto Rico passed a law invalidating all Puerto Rican birth certificates issued prior to July 1, 2010. In an effort to battle passport fraud and identity theft, the Government of Puerto Rico is replacing old birth certificates with enhanced security birth certificates.
The enhanced security birth certificates may be used as primary proof when applying for a US passport book or US passport card. The enhanced birth certificate is also good for passport renewals, but the expired passport is the recommended form of identification.
The new requirement does not pertain to Puerto Ricans who already have a valid U.S. passport or US passport card.

US Passport holders have something to consider before their next trip. Despite growing opposition to full body scanners at airports, the TSA has installed the machines at 133 US airports and has plans to install more. This initiative goes against warnings from medical experts that say the machines may be dangerous to passengers’ health.
Concern for passport holder safety is what prompted the TSA to move forward with full body scanners – however that may end up being the reason to discontinue use.
Dr. David Brenner, chief of the center for radiological research at New York’s Columbia University, has raised questions about the scanners presenting a risk of skin cancer – especially in children.
In Dubai, full body scanners are not used amidst concerns regarding passport holder personal privacy and potential health risks.
In addition to the risks, the US Government Accountability Office is also unsure as to whether the machines are even effective in detecting explosives or other dangerous materials.
The scanners are supposed to screen passport holders for metallic and nonmetallic items including weapons, explosives and other objects that can be concealed under layers of clothing.
The exact times and locations where the scanners are planned to be installed has not been disclosed as of yet, however is has been reported that the US government has plans to equip airports across the country.
US Passport holders can either agree to the full body scan or submit to a full body pat-down.
Passport holders should not be concerned about photos of their full body scans being kept on file or distributed as there is no storage capability. Cameras, cellular telephones, and all other devices that are capable of capturing images are prohibited.
