US Passports to Switzerland on the Rise: Rush Passport

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

US passportMost US citizens do not have a US passport and most US citizens do not travel abroad.  Approximately 30 percent of Americans hold a valid passport.  If you do the math, 70% of Americans do not have a US passport.  Why?  Is it because there is so much to see here in America?  Is it because of a lack of interest in traveling abroad.  Are the expenses of traveling abroad prohibitive?  Maybe the reason that more people don’t have passports is a combination of all of these things.  Regardless of the 30% of Americans with US passports, the number of U.S. travelers visiting Switzerland is on the rise.

The Swiss Federal Office of Statistics recently released data reporting that the arrivals of Americans in Switzerland increased by 11.5% in 2010.  US passport holders also spent almost 9% more nights in Swiss Hotels in 2010.

Are these US passport holders skiing the Swiss Alps?  Maybe they are using their passports to eat some fine cheese and chocolate?  Or it could be swiss watches that are drawing these US passport holders.

Swiss Statistics report that the surge in arrivals of US travelers since the end of 2009 through 2010 is unprecedented.

The most popular Swiss city among US passport holders is Lucerne.  The Matterhorn region and the city of Basel also seem to attract US passport holders.

There are various factors that have contributed to influx of US passport holders visiting Switzerland.  One reason is due to the new direct Swiss flights from San Francisco to Zurich.

Changes to US Child Passport Application Coming March 1, 2011

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

US passport applications are getting a make over on the heels of the recent repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell”.  When it comes to passport applications, the State Department is considering more gender-neutral language on passport applications.  Gay rights activists are insisting on further changes to federal policies that they maintain are unfavorable to gay Americans.

Get a Passport Quick in NYCCurrently, passport forms required for first-time passport applicants younger than 16 ask for child’s “Mother” and “Father”.  The State Department was planning to update the forms to ask instead for the names of a child’s “Parent 1″ and “Parent 2.”  Gay rights groups see the “parent” reference as a more gender-neutral reference for same-sex parents.

Gay rights groups are thrilled at the projected changes but feel that the passport application is just one of hundreds of government forms that still need to be changed.

The State Department’s statement about the passport changes states that the passport applications simply reflect “recognition of different types of families.”

Initially, the State Department had announced that children’s passport applications would no longer contain the words “mother” and “father”.  Instead the child passport application would contain the phrases “parent 1″ and “parent 2.”

However, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton intervened and ordered that the terms “mother” and “father” remain on passport forms.

The State Department has confirmed that the passport forms will now ask for the names of the child’s “mother or parent” and “father or parent,” or possibly “mother or parent 1″ and “father or parent 2.”

The new passport forms will be available beginning March 1, 2011.   In the meantime, people can continue using the current passport form as long as they plan to submit the passport application before March 1, 2011.

How to Get a Passport Book Filled With Stamps

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Passports give us the authorization to travel the world.  To some of us, it is only a dream.  In actuality, 67% of Americans do not even have a passport.  Is it because they do not have a desire to travel or is it because they don’t know how to get a passport – or could it be a little of both.

How to get a US passport bookEach time that you use your passport to travel abroad, you are eligible to collect passport stamps from the countries you visit.  These souvenirs decorate your passport and serve as reminders of all the places you’ve traveled.

Most people love to get passport stamps and each one is considered as a badge of honor.  There is one man, however who actually prefers not to get his passport stamped.  Sanjeev Midha, a 49 year old man from New Jersey tries his best not to get passport stamps.

He is a member of an elite group of passport holders consisting mostly of pilots, celebrities and business travelers who with 96 total passport pages have reached the maximum number of pages allowed in a passport.

The latest US passports come equipped with the standard 28 pages.  New US passports issued after 1996 have 20 pages reserved for stamps.  The maximum number of pages has increased to 100 pages.

Midha loves to travel and his passport pages are packed with stamp after stamp.

For instance, last summer Midha got quite a bit of passport stamps as he flew to Paris and moved onto Switzerland, Italy and Austria before flying to Turkey.  Then he flew to Spain to catch the World Cup finals.  After flying back home to New Jersey for just one evening, the family left for Asia. Their passports got stamped in China and Mongolia and India before flying to Toronto for a wedding and then straight to another vacation in Belize.

With plans to visit Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar in December, Midha will reach the 100 mark for the number of countries he has visited.

Passport Security Measures Advance With Latest Technology

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

US Passport technology is about to get a boost!  The US is always taking steps to be at the forefront of passport security.  Passport security and the latest technological advances go hand in hand.  The US Department of State has selected a passport security company to provide enhanced security features for the US Passport Card.  The purpose of the enhanced security features is to increase the level of security and fraud-detection capabilities of the US Passport Card.

Passport ExpeditorsThe plan is to add steganographic technology and software to the US Passport Cards.  Steganographic technology has been in use in other government agencies, security printing firms and other major corporations for nearly thirty years.  Steganographic technology as it pertains to passports includes cover embedding, data scrambling, data encryption, encoding and decoding methods, as well as optical and digital authentication devices.

The US passport is considered one of the most secure passports in the world.  It is a priority of the US Department of State to produce passports that are as secure as state-of-the-art technology permits.

US Passport Card Security Tip

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

In a previous Rush Passport™ passport blog, security loopholes in the new passports, e-passports, enhanced driver’s licenses and US Passport Cards were exposed.  The technology that is being compromised is included in the RFID (radio frequency identification tags).

To maximize security, US Passport Card holders are advised to keep the passport card in the sleeve when the card is not in use.

To maximize security, US Passport Card holders are advised to keep the passport card in the sleeve when the card is not in use.

Every new US Passport issued since 2007 has been designed with a computer chip embedded on its back cover.  The technology employed in these passports include wireless radio frequency identification (RFID).  Professor Avishai Wool at Tel Aviv University’s School of Electrical Engineering in Israel and his students demonstrated how simple it is to disrupt the radio frequency using simple devices constructed from disposable cameras and copper pipes.

Now, piggy-backing off of Professor Wool’s research, Chris Paget has constructed a device which operates out of his vehicle. The device is able to find and then reproduce the ‘unique’ RFID from US Passport Cards

Paget recently drove around in downtown San Francisco for 20 minutes looking to pick up RFID signals.  In his drive, the device successfully duplicated the tags of two US Passport Cards unbeknownst to the owners.

Due to the fact that the technology does not employ encryption and can be read from distances of over a mile, the tags are susceptible to cloning and tracking.

While the RFID chips in the US Passport are not as easy to clone as the ones in the US Passport Cards or the enhanced driver’s licenses, they are still not 100% secure.

To combat this problem, US Passport Cards are issued with a protective sleeve.  US Passport Card holders are advised to keep the passport card in the sleeve when the card is not in use.

Get a US Passport Card Today: Cross the Ambassador Bridge

Monday, July 26th, 2010
Now, there’s another great reason to get a US Passport Card – to cross the Ambassador Bridge. US Passport holders and Canadian Passport holders have been using the Ambassador Bridge for years.

US Passport holders can find great deals on designer perfumes fragrances from around the world, Canadian handcrafted art, fine china, crystal, porcelain, glassware, jewelry, watches, cigars and liquor - including the world-famous Canadian ice wine.

As reported in a previous Rush Passport™ blog entry, there are several reasons to get a US Passport Card.

Now, there’s another great reason to get a US Passport Card – to cross the Ambassador Bridge.  US Passport holders and Canadian Passport holders have been using the Ambassador Bridge for years.  A little more than 30 years ago, Manuel “Matty” Moroun bought the Ambassador Bridge that connects Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.  Moroun, now 83 years old, holds the honor of being the only person to privately own a border crossing in the United States and he has a monopoly over one of the nation’s busiest international trade routes.

The bridge is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Each day over 40,000 commuters, tourists and truck drivers cross the Windsor-Detroit border.  In addition, over $323 million worth of goods is transported daily.

There is plenty of Duty Free Shopping on both sides of the border in both Detroit and Canada which means no GST, no federal tax, no manufacturing tax, no excise tax and no provincial tax.  This all means huge savings.

US Passport holders can find great deals on designer perfumes fragrances from around the world, Canadian handcrafted art, fine china, crystal, porcelain, glassware, jewelry,  watches, cigars and liquor – including the world-famous Canadian ice wine.

As of June 1, 2009, when crossing US-Canada Border, a US Passport Card can be used to cross over into Canada.  Travelers must also have appropriate identification for all children making the trip.

Frequent travelers can also take advantage of the NEXUS program.  This will enable them to use dedicated lanes to cross the border between Canada and the US more quickly.

For international travelers wishing to enter Canada, from countries other than the U.S, a valid passport is required.
