A US passport is a travel document in the form of a small book or identification card (as is the case in the US passport card). A US passport gives a person the right to travel outside of the borders of the US. It is important to keep in mind that a US passport does guarantee that the passport holder will have the right to enter any country. A US passport can also be used as proof of citizenship.
2. What is a passport card?
The US passport card has been available since July 14, 2008. A US passport card is a wallet-sized travel document. It does not have the same capabilities as a US passport booklet. Did you know that adult US Passports are valid for 10 years? Child passports are good for 5 years. Is your US passport getting close to the 10 year mark? Passport security has come into question recently. A new passport questionnaire that asks many obscure questions is being discussed throughout the world of passports. All of this passport talk brings about an important questons: Just how secure is the US passport? With all of the hoops that one must jump through to get a passport, are there ways to beat the system?
Can’t a person who resembles another person just use their passport to travel abroad? A passport photo can look like someone else, so why can’t a person who looks similar the actual passport holder just use the passport?
While it sounds like a simple form of passport fraud, in actuality, its not really that simple. The US passport contains a high quality facial image that depending on the passport border may be examined with special software aimed at detecting fakes. The high resolution passport photo may seem small on the passport itself, but the passport photo is enlarged on the border patrol’s computer screen. The larger passport photo will help border patrol agents pick up differences more easily.
Generally, if the match is not a perfect match, then the passport holder would be selected for additional screening. Could a person get away with using someone else’s passport? The question as to whether or not someone could successfully use someone else passport depends on the country of origin of the passport, the specific border crossing, the diligence of the border agent and how much the passport photo looks like the person trying to use it.
Regardless, using another’s passport is a criminal offense punishable with jail time. Our suggestion: Get your own passport!

A passport case is headed to the US Supreme Court. The US Supreme Court agreed to listen to an appeal regarding whether an American child born in Jerusalem in 2002 will be allowed to list Israel as the place of birth in his passport. In 2004, Parents Ari and Naomi Zivotofsky filed a lawsuit after State Department officials refused to list Israel as their son Menachem’s birthplace. The State Department cited current US policy which lists Jerusalem as the city of birth rather than Israel for children born in Jerusalem.
Had the child been born in Tel Aviv or any other Israeli city, the child’s passport would list Israel as the place of birth. However, due to the Palestinian dispute over Jerusalem, the US has refrained in listing births that take place in Jerusalem as being born in Israel.
Even though Israel has declared Jerusalem its capital, the US along with several other nations around the world do not list Israel on the passport under place of birth if the birth takes place in Jerusalem.
In 2002, President George W. Bush signed a bill that directed the US Department of State to identify people born in Jerusalem with being born in Israel on their passports.
However, Bush overstepped the office of the president’s authority in formulating US foreign policy.
The US Department of State refuses to list Israel as the place of birth on passports for children born in Jerusalem because they feel that by recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, they will isolate the Palestinians and compromise the peace process.
According to the US Department of State, Tel Aviv is the capital of Israel, not Jerusalem. Currently, no country’s embassy is in Jerusalem. US passports of people born in Jerusalem will continue to list the place of birth as Jerusalem unless the US Supreme Court overturns the previous decision.

The US Department of State has created a new passport questionnaire in an effort to make the passport process more secure. The new passport questionnaire has been getting a lot of buzz. The 5 page passport questionnaire asks straightforward questions such as date of birth and current employer. However, there are also some strange questions that are somewhat puzzling.
The passport questionnaire requires the passport applicant to complete some bizarre fields such as “Who was present when you were born?” The passport applicant is also required to list every address that they have ever had, every place where they ever worked and whether or not they received pre-natal or post-natal medical care.
Does this seem like a lot of extraneous information to be on a passport application? Well, that’s not all. The passport applicant is also required to list personal details about siblings and parents. The information on the passport application is “voluntary” but failure to provide the information may result in the passport application being denied.
This proposed passport questionnaire is supposed to be geared towards passport applicants who are unable to produce an original birth certificate.

How Secure is the US Passport Card?
The US passport card is very hard to counterfeit. The passport card is laser engraved and contains state-of-the-art security features to minimize the chance of fraud. Production of the US passport card began in 2008. Since then almost 3 million US passport cards have been issued.
The passport card uses Radio Frequency Identification technology (RFID). This technology is widely used in other fields in addition to the passport field such as bank cards and EZPASS. For best results, it is advised to use the protective sleeve that the passport card is issued with. The protective sleeve prevents the passport card from being read when not in use.

Tired of waiting around for your passport to arrive? The US Department of State generally processes passports within 4-6 weeks. If that seems like a long time to wait for your passport, imagine if you lived in Pakistan. Currently, over 50,000 passport applicants who applied for their passports over 2 months ago are still waiting for their passports to arrive. The passport problems are being blamed on faulty passport printing machines and a shortage of passport lamination paper. The passport lamination paper is used to cover the machine-readable passports.
It seems like this is a recurring problem as the passport printing has been delayed for the same reasons 3 times in the past 3 years. The passport agency has not taken steps to correct these issues. In the meantime, Pakistani passport officials say that they are awaiting the arrival of new passport printing machines from Germany.
Can you just imagine all of the people with expired passports, lost passports who have applied for a new passport and are still waiting?
