From time to time, the US Department of State issues travel warnings and advisories to US passport holders. It is important for US passport holders to utilize this resource for optimum travel conditions. You can access a list of current US Department of State warnings by clicking here: US Department of State Travel Warnings
Most recently, the US Department of State has issued a travel warning for US passport holders planning to visit or already visiting Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Due to heightened tension and security risks, the US Department of State advises against travel to the areas mentioned above. In essence, US government employees are prohibited from personal travel to the West Bank. The only places in the West Bank that are permitted to travel to are Jericho and Bethlehem. US passport holders should also avoid travel to the West Bank.
US passport holders should also avoid using public transportation. US passport holders should also avoid large gatherings/demonstrations. It should also be noted that some US passport holders with Israeli nationality may experience significant difficulty when entering / exiting Israel or the West Bank.
There is plenty more useful information for US passport holders already in or planning to visit Israel listed on the following website: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_5841.html

Overstaying a visa is a serious offense. The penalties can be harsh if you are caught overstaying a visa. A man arrived in China on a multiple entry tourist visa that would allow him to stay in China for 90 days. After 90 days he would need to leave and would be allowed to re-enter the country with his passport.
However, it turns out that the man never actually left. Instead he used six counterfeit passport stamps to cover up the fact that he overstayed his visa for almost a full year. The man was caught when he tried to board a flight to Hong Kong and it was discovered that his visa contained several counterfeit passport stamps.
If he had exited and re-entered the country as he was supposed to, then there would not have been a need to fake the passport stamps. Counterfeit passport stamps can result in fines and arrest. As it turns out, the man received a fine after it was determined that his actions didn’t produce any serious consequences. Altering a US passport is a federal offense.
When it comes to passports and visas it is best to do everything by the book. It doesn’t pay to try to commit passport fraud because eventually it will catch up with you. In the United States, passport fraud is a serious offense and can result in jail time.

Have you ever thought about going on the Disney Cruise? Do you know that if the cruise leaves the country you will need a passport. A woman, Mrs. Arenson, planned her Disney Cruise scheduled for this September and applied for her daughter’s US passport in May. She applied for the passport four months prior to the trip to be sure she would receive the passport in time and avoid problems.
The woman’s daughter, Isabella, was born in Taiwan and is a legal US citizen with a social security number. The child was adopted in 2008 and has a green card proving that she had entered the US legally.
Back in June, Mrs. Arenson received a letter from the US Dept of State asking for proof of her daughter’s permanent residency. A green card would do the trick, so Arensen sent a copy of her daughter’s green card to the State Department’s passport office.
The passport office sent a letter in July asking for Arenson to send the actual green card itself to fulfill the passport requirements. Arenson sent the original green card via certified mail.
Records indicate that someone at the State Dept. signed for the letter and received the green card. However, it turns out that someone in the passport office lost the green card.
Now, the passport office wanted Isabella’s original Taiwan passport. Mrs. Arenson hand delivered it to the passport office to avoid further confusion.
There is a happy ending to the story as Isabella’s US passport arrived earlier this week and the Disney Cruise planned for September is on! Isabella and her mom are looking forward to checking out the Bahamas with Isabella’s new US passport.

Amaechi Morton is one of the best in the world at the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Morton will be competing at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. However, 3 years ago if you asked Morton if he would ever return to Nigeria, his reply would have been “Never!”
In 2009 Morton used his US passport to visit Nigeria in order to compete in the IAAF World Championships. When he arrived back home to the US, he threw his US passport in the garbage and told his mom he would never return.
However, when he learned that he had the chance to compete in the Olympics, Morton called his mom is a panic asking if she knew where his passport was. His mother reminded him that he threw his passport in the garbage before informing him that she had fished the passport out of the trash.
Morton holds dual citizenship with the US and Nigeria and he used his US passport to travel to Nigeria where he qualified for the Nigerian Olympic team.
Morton’s mom, Obiekwe, had the passport the whole time. She thought it was a silly decision to throw his US passport into the garbage and figured that there would be a time that her son would need the passport in the future.
Morton tried out for the US Olympic team first and finished in 4th place. Only the top three finishers qualified for the games. That’s when the idea to use his passport to fly to Nigeria surfaced.
Let the lesson be learned – don’t throw your US passport in the trash – you never know when you may need it.
