Passport Babies or Birth Tourism Causing Problems in US and Canada: Rush Passport

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

ny passportWhat would you do to get a US passport?  If you are a US citizen, all you have to do is apply, show proof of citizenship, pay the fees and there shouldn’t be a problem.  The same goes for getting a Canadian passport.  However, there is a widespread problem that is growing in the United States and Canada; it’s called “passport babies” or “birth tourism”.

Canada is ready to crack down on passport babies otherwise known as birth tourism.  For those unfamiliar with the terms, they refer to the practice of travelling to another country such as the US or Canada for the purpose of getting your newborn child US or Canadian citizenship.  This practice results in the newborn child being eligible to apply for a US or Canadian passport.  This is becoming increasingly common with pregnant women from China.

There are actually organizations who, for a fee, coach pregnant women to travel to the United States and Canada to give birth.  The newborns gain access to passport eligibility and many other considerable benefits.

Canada plans to introduce legislation to prevent this practice of getting passports for newborns of foreign parents.  In some cases, it has been reported that Chinese women are being coached to hide their pregnancies and to apply for visitor or student visas.

When the birth certificate is issued no questions are asked that pertain to the immigration status of the parents.  The only two countries in the developed world that allow for an automatic inheritance of citizenship to those born on their soil are Canada and the United States.

Getting a US passport gives the newborn countless benefits including the right to attend US Universities.  From a US and Canadian standpoint, birth tourism or passport babies is a way to exploit a loophole in the legislation.

Visa Regulations from China to the US: Rush Passport NYC

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

More and more Chinese tourists are traveling abroad.  Many Chinese tourists choose to use their passports to visit the United States, but others are traveling elsewhere due to visa regulations.  More and more countries are competing for the Chinese tourism and are trying to simplify their visa regulations.

Recently, President Barack Obama vowed to make the procedures in China for non-immigrant visas more efficient.  Travel services are looking to cash in on the recent Chinese tourism surge.  Having a passport alone is not enough to travel.  Many countries require visas and the visa process can be tough.  Chinese passport holders may have to wait several weeks and sometimes even several months to receive visas to travel to the United States.

Some experts predict that the number of Chinese passport holders requiring visas for travel to the US will double in 2012.

While the United States is considered to be the #1 ”dream destination” for Chinese citizens according to research by the US Travel Association. more Chinese tourists are visiting France.  It is supposed that the main reason for this is due to the US visa system.

Countries that have made their visa process simpler for Chinese citizens have experienced greater numbers of Chinese travelers.

The US visa system for Chinese visitors can be made simpler.  For starters, the Chinese visa applications are printed in English.  If they were translated, it would make the process easier.  Also, the fact that every visa applicant is required to be personally interviewed lengthens and complicates the visa application process.

Visa applicants generally have to wait 2 to 3 months just to get an interview.  Once they are scheduled for the interview, visa applicants generally have to wait in line for a full day just to speak with someone.  After the long wait, the actual interview takes less than 3 minutes.

Right off the bat, this eliminates the United States as a destination for travelers who can’t wait 3 months for an interview.

The next passport blog will deal with ways that the US can make the visa process better for Chinese passport holders.

Passport Photos in NYC: More Than Meets The Eye

Thursday, January 5th, 2012
Passport photos should not be underestimated.  Since the passport is a very important document and is good for 10 years, don’t just roll out of bed and have your passport photo taken.  Trust me, having to look at that same blah photo for 10 years of traveling may put a damper on your trip for a moment each time that you are asked to whip out your passport.  Before today, I didn’t give much thought to the way people looked in their passport photos.  That was until I met Alma Schneider.  Alma is founder of Take Back the Kitchen, LLC.

Alma Schneider's Passport Photos

Alma had an upcoming trip overseas and needed to replace her expired passport.  She arrived at Rush Passport with her expired passport in hand and she was upset.  She wasn’t as upset about the expired passport as she was about her passport photo.  The photo was taken 14 years ago and she was upset because she looked good in the passport photo.  Most people would be upset about a passport photo that looked bad, but the reason why Alma was upset was because she didn’t think that she would be able to recapture the youthfulness she exhibited 14 years earlier.

Alma set out to get a passport photo taken that she could proudly present for the next 10 years.

To find out how this story turns out, you’ll have to read Alma’s blog at http://takebackthekitchen.blogspot.com/2011/12/cashew-kale-chips-and-cant-i-just-use.html

If you want a passport photo that will last the next 10 years, come to Rush Passport’s NYC passport office.  We will do our best to make you look your best!  After all, the passport is good for 10 years, why shouldn’t the passport photo make you feel good too?

US Passport Revoked: Travel Limited to New York for USA Cricket Team Captain: Rush Passport

Saturday, December 17th, 2011

Passport NYCPassports can be confiscated from passport holders if they are considered to be a risk to leave the country.  Such is the case for USA cricket team captain, Steve Massiah.  Massiah’s passport was confiscated by the US and his travel is restricted to New York following his November 22nd arrest for falsifying mortgage loan applications.

Massiah, the USA team captain, is not only without a passport, but he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.  While Massiah is confined to New York, he was given permission to travel to Florida for the US Cricket Open.  Obviously he didn’t need his passport as he did not travel internationally from New York to Florida.

It is unlikely that Massiah will be participating for the New York Region in the USACA Twenty20 Nationals scheduled from January 20 to 22 in Florida.  It is in that tournament where the USA squad will be selected for the ICC World Tournament.  Without a passport, Massiah will not be of much use to the US Team.

It is alleged that Massiah and two others planned to participate in a scheme to defraud Countrywide Home Loans by obtaining  funds under fraudulent pretenses.
While it is a right for US citizens to obtain passports, it is also a privilege to hold a valid US passport.  Passport privileges can be revoked on a case by case basis.

Passport News: Will Taiwan Be Included in the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP)? : Rush Passport NYC

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

It seems likely that Taiwan will be the latest country to be included in the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP).  The new addition to the visa-waiver program is likely to be included by December 2011.

Unidentified senior U.S. government sources have been very positive according to Taiwan Foreign Minister Timothy Yang.  Yang is confident that Taiwan will be listed in its Visa Waiver program before 2012.

After being put in the candidate list, Taiwan passport holders are expected to be officially granted visa-waiver privilege by the United States next year, he said.

Yang, stated that in an attempt to be considered for the VWP, Taiwan has been systematically meeting the VWP’s requirements.  Some of VWP guidelines include issuing biometric passports and the mandating an in-person passport application for first-time passport applicants.

Taiwan is also working on agreements regarding the exchange of information on stolen or counterfeit passports.  Taiwan and the US are discussing sharing information regarding terrorism and the collaboration between the countries on combating major crimes caused by passport fraud.

If Taiwan is accepted into the VWP candidate list by the US government, then the next step will include a delegation of US Department of Homeland Security officials visiting the country and making a determination as to whether or not their procedures meet US standards.

Once the inspection report is complete, it will be up to the US Secretary of Homeland Security to inform Congress whether or not Taiwan is recommended to be included in the VWP.

Congress may then hold a hearing to review the findings, but it may not veto the Homeland Security’s decision.

It is a good idea to closely watch this developing story as a decision can be made as early as next month.
