U.S. Passports are considered a liability more than a privilege to some people. Each year, more and more U.S. citizens rid themselves of U.S. passports in an effort to hide their assets from the IRS. By no means is it a large number of U.S. citizens who are renouncing their citizenship, but the number doubled from 2009 to 2010. In 2009, 742 U.S. passport holders renounced their citizenship compared to 1,534 citizens who dumped their passports.
The move by these citizens who rid themselves of their U.S. passports was a response to the U.S. government’s growing efforts to locate and tax their assets from around the world.

Most US citizens do not have a US passport and most US citizens do not travel abroad. Approximately 30 percent of Americans hold a valid passport. If you do the math, 70% of Americans do not have a US passport. Why? Is it because there is so much to see here in America? Is it because of a lack of interest in traveling abroad. Are the expenses of traveling abroad prohibitive? Maybe the reason that more people don’t have passports is a combination of all of these things. Regardless of the 30% of Americans with US passports, the number of U.S. travelers visiting Switzerland is on the rise.
The Swiss Federal Office of Statistics recently released data reporting that the arrivals of Americans in Switzerland increased by 11.5% in 2010. US passport holders also spent almost 9% more nights in Swiss Hotels in 2010.
Are these US passport holders skiing the Swiss Alps? Maybe they are using their passports to eat some fine cheese and chocolate? Or it could be swiss watches that are drawing these US passport holders.
Swiss Statistics report that the surge in arrivals of US travelers since the end of 2009 through 2010 is unprecedented.
The most popular Swiss city among US passport holders is Lucerne. The Matterhorn region and the city of Basel also seem to attract US passport holders.
There are various factors that have contributed to influx of US passport holders visiting Switzerland. One reason is due to the new direct Swiss flights from San Francisco to Zurich.

Can a US citizen use a US passport to travel to Cuba? The answer is “Yes.” Earlier this month President Barack Obama made traveling to Cuba much easier for college students with US passports.
For the past 7 years, Cuba has been practically completely off-limits. However, passport holders wishing to visit Cuba have reason to celebrate. While travel restrictions haven’t been completely lifted, it is certainly easier for researchers and academics to use their US passports to visit Cuba.
In the US, many students benefit from studying abroad. Cuba is a virtually untapped place for students with US passports to visit, study and learn. Exposure to other countries is a great thing to put on a resume and travel abroad gives students unique experiences.
Leisure travel by US passport holders to Cuba is still not permitted. US passport holders cannot travel to Cuba due to the U.S. economic embargo, which has been in effect for nearly 50 years.
Obama has placed students holding US passports in a unique category of travelers and they have been granted some of the only passes into Cuba.
Cuba isn’t the only country that Obama is focused on. There is also a new initiative for students holding US passports to visit China as well.
The White House hopes to double the number of students (holding US passports) traveling to China by 2014.

Passports: Can a person own more than one passport?
Immigration laws all over the world allow one person to own multiple passports. The practice of owning more than one passport is known as dual citizenship or even multi-citizenship. The benefits of owning more than one passport allow you to travel easier and give a passport holder the rights that citizens have of the country in which the passport was issued. Passport holders can easily work, study, own a home and host of other rights when you own a passport from a corresponding country.
How to Get a Passport
Each country has its own requirements regarding getting a passport. However, there is practically no limit to the number of passports that one person can have. Citizenship can be determined based upon place of birth, marriage, permanent place of residence and by being passed down from parents. Since a child gains the citizenship of his/her parents, therefore a passport can be obtained based on the country of birth of his/her parents, and/or the country of his citizenship.
Passports at Birth
Believe it or not, but at birth a child may already hold five passports. This is about to get a bit complicated, but imagine that the father is, for example, from the UK, but is now a naturalized citizen of the U.S. Now imagine that the mother was born in Ireland but is now a citizen of Canada. Are you still with me? Now, imagine that child is born in New Zealand. This child is then eligible to own passports from these five countries.
Passports in Adult Life
Now, this same person has 5 passports. Now there are additional passports that can get obtained as an adult that are based on residence or marriage. However, it is important to keep in mind that not all countries allow dual citizenship, which means having more than one passport is not allowed. Other countries have restrictions such as allowing for a person to gain that country’s citizenship after living there for 3-5 years, or after being married to a citizen of that country and living in that country for at least three years.

375 diplomatic passports were revoked in Ghana just one week after Wikileaks released documents exposing the corruption of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) governments.
The corruption that led the Atta Mills government to revoke the 375 diplomatic passports was in the way they handled the fight against narcotics in the country.
The diplomatic passports that were revoked include Pastors, Imams, businessmen and chiefs. Not only is there no official word by the government that the passports were revoked because of the passport holders’ connection to drugs, and the government of Ghana flat out denies that the passports were revoked due to the WikiLeaks report.
President of Ghana, Atta Mills, according to the WikiLeaks report, was quoted as telling the American Ambassador in Ghana that he felt that there was a lot of corruption among airport officials and other holders of diplomatic passports.
The decision to revoke the 375 diplomatic passports less than a week after the WikiLeaks report makes one wonder whether these passports would have been revoked had the WikiLeaks report not have been released.
If indeed many of the people whose passports were revoked were involving in the traffic of narcotics, then this may prove to have been an effective strike against the narcotics operation of Ghana.

Stolen passports are also possible, but passport theft usually occurs once a passport holder is traveling. People also lose their passports during travel.
In you recall a previous Rush Passport passport blog entry introduced our readers to Mexican soccer player, Carlos Vela. In April 2010, Vela lost his passport and ended up missing the biggest game of his career – after he was unable to travel to Barcelona for the Arsenal’s Champions League quarter-final soccer match. His team lost the match and now Vela actually takes his passport with him to bed!
The latest passport blunder came at the hands of another athlete, star cricket player Graeme Swann. Swann realized that his passport was lost right just 48 hours before departure for a big match in Australia.
Swann actually tweeted to his 78,000 Twitter followers “Are passports still absolutely required to travel overseas? If so then I fear today may be one of frantic searching.”
Twitter would not have been my first choice if I discovered that my passport was missing 48 hours before a scheduled flight abroad. I would’ve called Rush Passport™!
However, all turned out fine five hours later when Swann again turned to Twitter to add: “My passport turned up in my ‘safe’ place, down the back of my kitchen bin.”

According to the US Department of State website, “The Puerto Rican government has passed a new law that will invalidate all Puerto Rican birth certificates starting October 30, 2010.”
The US Department of State is still accepting Puerto Rican birth certificates for passport services and will continue to do so until the new passport policy is announced on October 30th. The new passport legislation will not affect Puerto Rican-born passport holders with valid US passports.
Originally the Puerto Rican government planned to discontinue accepting Puerto Rican birth certificates as proof to obtain a passport on July 1, 2010. However, an amendment was recently passed by the Puerto Rican government that extended the date of invalidation to October 30, 2010.

Passports give us the authorization to travel the world. To some of us, it is only a dream. In actuality, 67% of Americans do not even have a passport. Is it because they do not have a desire to travel or is it because they don’t know how to get a passport – or could it be a little of both.
Each time that you use your passport to travel abroad, you are eligible to collect passport stamps from the countries you visit. These souvenirs decorate your passport and serve as reminders of all the places you’ve traveled.
Most people love to get passport stamps and each one is considered as a badge of honor. There is one man, however who actually prefers not to get his passport stamped. Sanjeev Midha, a 49 year old man from New Jersey tries his best not to get passport stamps.
He is a member of an elite group of passport holders consisting mostly of pilots, celebrities and business travelers who with 96 total passport pages have reached the maximum number of pages allowed in a passport.
The latest US passports come equipped with the standard 28 pages. New US passports issued after 1996 have 20 pages reserved for stamps. The maximum number of pages has increased to 100 pages.
Midha loves to travel and his passport pages are packed with stamp after stamp.
For instance, last summer Midha got quite a bit of passport stamps as he flew to Paris and moved onto Switzerland, Italy and Austria before flying to Turkey. Then he flew to Spain to catch the World Cup finals. After flying back home to New Jersey for just one evening, the family left for Asia. Their passports got stamped in China and Mongolia and India before flying to Toronto for a wedding and then straight to another vacation in Belize.
With plans to visit Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar in December, Midha will reach the 100 mark for the number of countries he has visited.
