Expired passport? Lost passport? You’re not alone. According to a UK passport study, it turns out that 1 out of 10 British travelers have previously planned or attempted to travel abroad with an expired passport. Incidentally, if your passport is expired, then you will be considered ineligible to travel abroad.
An expired passport can ruin a vacation, can be a disaster to a business trip and can prevent travel abroad. However, in a passport emergency, it is still possible to get a passport – even on the same day. Passport expediting services are available to travelers who have lost their passports, had their passports stolen, have expired passports and a host of other reasons. The UK study also shows that 24% of UK passport holders thought you could travel using your passport right up until the date which it expires. This, by the way, is not always the case as tourists often need up to 6 months remaining on their passports when traveling to some destinations.
The UK passport survey also discovered that almost 10% of UK travelers had their travel plans affected by an expired passport. Believe it or not, 13% of UK passport holders thought that they didn’t need a passport to travel within Europe. 3% of UK passport holders actually thought that a passport was not necessary to travel to the United States.

It is estimated that approximately 1 of 3 Americans hold a valid US passport. That means that there are an awful lot of Americans who don’t have a US passport.
One man, Rick Steves is trying to inspire those Americans who have yet to get a US passport. How? He has launched the “No Passport? No Problem!” campaign. Under this program, Steves pledges to underwrite the cost of a first-time passport for any passport applicants who sign up for one of his travel company’s tours.
Steves he got his passport at the age 14 and he has since been well traveled, having had his passport stamped throughout Europe. He has written tour guidebooks and runs a travel company that takes approximately 10,000 Americans abroad each year.
Sure, Steves is using the fact that many Americans don’t have a passport to help sell tours, but some may need that extra push to take the plunge and finally get a US passport.
Nearly 14 million US passports and US passport cards were issued in 2010, but still approximately 70% of US citizens don’t have a passport.
In order to qualify for the free passports, clients must send in copies of their first-time 2011 passport with a receipt from Steves’ tour company.
It seems that Steves is getting Americans passports – one passport at a time.

Here’s another reason for you to get a passport… It’s called the Real ID Act. The Real ID Act sets out new rules by the federal government that will require anyone renewing a driver’s license to produce proof of identity. The only acceptable proof is a birth certificate or valid US passport.
The purpose of this act is to help protect the US from terrorists. These regulations were developed after the 9/11 Commission findings showed that 18 of the 19 hijackers had utilized forged driver’s licenses to board the planes.
This Real ID Act was set to go into effect in May 2011, but now it has been extended until October 2011.
Now is a good time to get a US passport. The US passport can be used as proof of identity towards renewing your driver’s license.
It is especially a good idea for married women to get a US passport because their name at birth is different from their married name.
If you don’t have a US passport or birth certificate to supply as proof of identity for driver’s license renewal, under the Real ID Act you can still be issued a “noncompliant” license. A “noncompliant” license is good for driving or cashing checks, but will not be accepted at airports or federal agencies.

US passports are a privilege of being a US citizen. However that doesn’t mean that it is your right to get a passport on the same day. Unlike ‘bigfoot’ and the ‘lochness monster’, same day passport do actually exist.
Just how secure is the US Passport?

Passports: Can a person own more than one passport?
Immigration laws all over the world allow one person to own multiple passports. The practice of owning more than one passport is known as dual citizenship or even multi-citizenship. The benefits of owning more than one passport allow you to travel easier and give a passport holder the rights that citizens have of the country in which the passport was issued. Passport holders can easily work, study, own a home and host of other rights when you own a passport from a corresponding country.
How to Get a Passport
Each country has its own requirements regarding getting a passport. However, there is practically no limit to the number of passports that one person can have. Citizenship can be determined based upon place of birth, marriage, permanent place of residence and by being passed down from parents. Since a child gains the citizenship of his/her parents, therefore a passport can be obtained based on the country of birth of his/her parents, and/or the country of his citizenship.
Passports at Birth
Believe it or not, but at birth a child may already hold five passports. This is about to get a bit complicated, but imagine that the father is, for example, from the UK, but is now a naturalized citizen of the U.S. Now imagine that the mother was born in Ireland but is now a citizen of Canada. Are you still with me? Now, imagine that child is born in New Zealand. This child is then eligible to own passports from these five countries.
Passports in Adult Life
Now, this same person has 5 passports. Now there are additional passports that can get obtained as an adult that are based on residence or marriage. However, it is important to keep in mind that not all countries allow dual citizenship, which means having more than one passport is not allowed. Other countries have restrictions such as allowing for a person to gain that country’s citizenship after living there for 3-5 years, or after being married to a citizen of that country and living in that country for at least three years.

Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, the Department of State has given the public access to thousands of celebrity passport applications.
In case you missed the last 6 Rush Passport™ passport blog entries we highlighted the passport applications of 6 of the 20th Centuries most famous Americans. Some of the passport applications had passport photos and some did not. However, the passport applications were filled with plenty of facts about the celebrity passport applicants.
Bet you didn’t know that Yankee slugger Babe Ruth got his passport to play baseball in Havana, Cuba. Did you know that Marilyn Monroe’s passport application listed her as Marilyn Monroe – not Norma Jean? Ernest Hemingway’s passport is one of the most well traveled passports around. In 1957, Judy Garland’s passport was only valid for travel to and in Bulgaria. Jesse Owens filled out his passport application on July 1, 1936 – just weeks before he won 4 gold medals in the Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Ironically, in 1944 Humphrey Bogart’s passport only allowed him to travel to North Africa where he filmed Casablanca two years earlier.
