Passport Blog: Emergency Passports by Rush Passport NYC

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

passport nycThe focus of today’s Rush Passport™ blog is a passport article in which 7 On Your Side helped out a Greenville County, South Carolina woman.   According to the passport article, Ruth Jackson who was born in the United States needs a passport to travel to the island of Jamaica this month.  Back in April, Jackson’s daughter Lisa Owens applied for her mom’s passport and the passport has not yet been received.  According to Owens, the US Department of State would not accept her mother’s delayed birth certificate.  In addition to this issue, Jackson’s baptismal records were not kept of file at her church.  Also, Jackson’s school records were destroyed in a fire as confirmed by a letter produced by Byrnes High School.  To top everything off, her marriage certificate only lists her age at the time of marriage and doesn’t list her date of birth.

When Jackson ran into these issues getting her passport, she gave up and was ready to cancel her trip.  Owens tried to help her mom get her passport and contacted 7 On Your Side.  In turn, 7 On Your Side contacted the U.S. Postal Service, the Department of State and Congressman Trey Gowdy’s office.

Finally, after several weeks of work between all of the agencies, Jackson is getting two pieces of documentation that should help her get her passport.  The two final pieces that will help Jackson get a passport are a 10 year driving history and an affidavit signed by her brother and sister proving that she was born in the United States.

How Long Does it Take to Get a Passport? : Rush Passport NYC, Passport Expeditors

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

US Passports are important travel documents that give US citizens the freedom to travel to many places around the world.  A common passport question is: How long does it take to get a passport?  The answer to this question of how long it takes to get a passport depends on certain criteria.  The length of time it takes to get a US passport depends on when, where and how you apply.

Here is a simple guide to help you get a US passport as quickly as possible:

  1. When Is the Best Time to Apply for a Passport? The time of the year that you choose to get a passport can have an effect on the length of time it will take to receive the passport.  It seems that the busiest time of the year to apply for a US passport is during the summer months.  It may be quicker to apply for a passport during the off-peak months such as January and February.  This may speed up the process of getting a passport if you are going through the US Department of State.  However, when applying for a US passport through Rush Passport™, Official US Passport Expeditors, you can get a US passport within 24 hours – even at the busiest time of year.
  2. Where is the Quickest Place to Apply for a Passport?  You can apply for a US passport through the United States Postal Service.  It can take up to 3 months to receive your passport if you apply during the busy passport season.  During off-peak periods, it generally takes 4-6 weeks.  If you apply directly through the US Department of State, the process may also take 4-6 weeks.  If you need a US passport sooner than that, you can apply for a US passport through Rush Passport™, Official US Passport Expeditors, you can get a US passport within 24 hours – even at the busiest time of year.
  3. How Should You Apply for a Passport if You Need a Passport in a Hurry?  Depending on the time of year, applying for a passport through the United Postal Service can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months.  You may be able to cut this time in half if you choose to pay extra for United States Postal Service’s expedited service.   However, if you have a passport emergency or if you need to get your passport sooner, you can use Rush Passport™ Passport Expediting Service and get your passport on the same day as you apply.

New York Democrats Aiming to Lower US Passport Fees: Rush Passport

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

US Passports are necessary for travel to Canada.  Did you know that New Yorkers have four border crossings into Canada?  New Yorkers frequently cross over into Canada using their US passports.  They also produce their US passports upon returning to the US from Canada.  However, some New Yorkers feels that the cost of  a US passport is preventing them from getting a passport.

US passportTheir sentiments have began to pick up some steam as US Representative Kathy Hochul, a Democrat from the 26th District in New York along with US Representative Brian Higgins, also a Democrat, but from New York’s 27th District have introduced new legislation to lower the cost of getting a US passport.

The US Democratic Representatives feel that people who live in western New York are being charged so much for a passport that the cost has become prohibitive.  They feel that the federal government should not be profiting from the US passport industry and that instead this should be provided as a service to US citizens in which the government breaks even.

The new passport proposal, Passport Fee Relief Act, passport holders would receive a refundable tax credit which would in essence be like getting reimbursed for the passport application fee of up to $140.

Another proposed passport bill is called the Passport Acquisition Savings and Security (PASS) Act.  Under this proposal, the US State Department would only be permitted to set the passport fee at the actual cost of providing a passport.

If these passport proposals are put into effect, it would not only affect passport applicants in New York, but all across the United States.  In order for the passport legislation to pass, it will need support from members of congress throughout the US.

Are Passport Fees Going to Get Lowered? : Rush Passport NYC

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Passport fees too expensive?  Do you think that passports cost too much money?  Two members of congress from NY have a plan to make passports more affordable.  Democrats Brian Higgins and Kathy Hochul represent districts near the US – Canada border where thousands of passport holders travel cross each day.

Passport Fees LowerTheir constituents not only want the passport fees to be lower, but they need passports now more than ever before due to the stricter requirements for travelers wishing to cross the US – Canada border.

The plan to lower the cost of passports may carry some weight since both Higgins and Hochul server on the Homeland Security Committee.

An adult passport currently costs $110 + $25 processing fee.  The adult passport is good for 10 years.  The cost is approximately $13 per year.  Proponents think that by lowering the cost of getting a passport more people will apply for passports.  Others think that passport fees are already low enough.  New technology and security measures have made the cost of producing a US passport rise.  By lowering the cost of the passport, the passports would actually cost the US Department of State money.

Do I Need a New Passport if My Appearance Has Changed to the Point that I am Unrecognizable?

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

passport photoDo I need a new passport if I don’t look like the person in the passport photo anymore?  Passport photos don’t always do the passport holder justice.  But, there are times when the passport doesn’t look anything like the passport holder.  I’m not talking about fake passports, I’m talking about a person whose passport photo doesn’t look like them at all.  The adult US passport is valid for ten years.  A lot can happen to a person’s appearance in ten years that can make their passport photo unrecognizable.

The most common change that a person can undergo in ten years is to their hair.  Hair can turn gray, it can be dyed different colors or it can fall out completely.  A person can grow or shave off facial hair.  But, for the most part, it may be unlikely that hair would change so much that the passport holder would be detained due to concerns that the passport is not theirs.

However, a person’s weight may fluctuate in ten years to the point where they may be unrecognizable with regard to their passport photo and their appearance in person.  People may experience such a drastic weight gain or weight loss in ten years that they look nothing like their passport photos.

A person’s passport may not be accepted for travel by border officials if their appearance has changed to the point at which they cannot be identified from the photo in their passport.   If this is the case, the person should apply for a new passport, even if the old passport has not yet expired yet.

In addition to changes to hair and weight, there are other instances in which a person may need to apply for a new passport due to concerns over the passport photo matching their appearance.  Anyone who has undergone significant facial cosmetic plastic surgery or trauma to the face may need to apply for a new passport.  A person with added or removed facial piercings or tattoos may also need to apply for a new passport.  Another reason that a person may need to apply for a new passport is if they have undergone a transgender procedure.

Last, but not least, a child may get an adult passport at age 16 and may have aged so drastically before the 10 years of the passport’s validity is up that they need to apply for a new passport.

If you feel that you are unrecognizable from your passport photo, you can apply for a new passport.  If you think that you can still be identified from your passport photo, then you do not need to apply for a new passport.

If you feel that you need a new passport because your appearance has changed to the point that you are unrecognizable in comparison to your passport photo, contact Rush Passport™.

If you need passport photos or other passport services such as an expedited passport, emergency passport, same day passport, US Passport book, US Passport Card, be sure to contact Rush Passport™.
