Online Passport Applications

Online Passport Processing

Online passports are really taking off in India.  The facility for online application introduced by the passport office has greatly reduced the amount of manual work necessary for the registration of passport applications.

Within 24 hours, they are able to nearly double the amount of passports being processed in half the time.  This is important because it helps people who have passport emergencies, need rush passports, need passports on the same day and travelers who have lost their passports, have expired passports or need passport renewal services.

The online application for passports not only saves time but has also reduced the need for the employment of extra staff at the Passport Office.

Previously, the entire passport application filing work was done manually. Since the online passport system has been introduced, much of the work is completed online.

Passport officials at the passport office note that not only is work getting done fast, but the online passport registration has minimized the chances of the passport applications being rejected for inaccuracies.

Passport applicants not only file passport applications online, but they also get information regarding the status of their passport applications.  After online applications are filed, the passport applicant receives an online registration number that can be reviewed online.

Passport  applicants can also find out their passports were issued and received notification and reasons for rejection of their passport applications.

Currently, it takes 2-3 days after the application has been filed before they should visit the passport office.

Passport Security Makeover in the UK!

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

Passports in the UK are about to get a makeover!  The UK Passports have been redesigned in an effort to help fight identity theft and passport fraud.

Passport UK security

Enhanced passport security features include placing the passport security chip out of view as well as a personal data section of the new passport that features holograms.

The passport holder’s personal details used to be on the back of the passport and now they appear on the passport’s second page.  The passport photo of the passport holder now appears twice.  The new passports will be in circulation starting October 2010.

Cosmetic changes to the UK passport include pages that will display UK scenes such as the White Cliffs of Dover and the Giant’s Causeway.

The government expects the new passport to give UK citizens added piece of mind as well as solid protection from identity theft and passport fraud.

The main difference between the existing passports and the enhanced passports is that the security chip will now be hidden inside the passport cover.

This new feature is intended to make it more difficult to alter the chip without causing visible damage to the passport cover.

The change of adding the personal data to page 2 of the passport is an effort to speed up passenger wait times when traveling through border patrols.

This combination of physical and electronic security features will make the UK passport one of the most secure passports in the world, in line with the international passport standards.

Passport Renewals Challenged

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Passports are important documents that not only can be used for identification, but more importantly passports are needed for international travel.

Passport Services

The census form is also an important document – but what does it have to do with the passport?  Right now – not much… but if Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe has anything to say about it passport renewals will be contingent upon completion of census forms.

There is currently a problem in Canada regarding low census form returns.  Duceppe feels that if citizens do not fill out census forms that the government should withhold services such as initial passport applications and passport renewals.

Citizens have rights, but they also have responsibilities.

Can the government refuse to provide government services such as processing a passport?  Or is this going too far?

Proponents of withholding passports feel that getting a passport is a privilege that citizens must earn through cooperation with governmental requests.  Those opposed to the proposed passport legislation feel that the government does not have the right to withhold passport services regardless of whether or not the census form is completed.

It should be interesting to see how this question of withholding passports turns out.

Passport Application Backlog is Over

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

The Passport backlog in Ireland is finally over!  People who wish to get a passport can now expect to get a passport processed within 10 working days.

Get a Passport

Back in May in a previous Rush Passport™ passport blog entry, it was reported that there was a backlog of over 70,000 passports.  The passport team at the passport agency formulated a plan to alleviate the passport backlog and they were successful.  In less than 4 months, the passport agency has made a significant impact in passport processing times

Currently, there are just fewer than 25,000 passport applications in the system.  This number of passport applications being processed is considered to be within the normal range.

The recruitment of 50 extra temporary passport staff helped to expedite more than 68,000 additional passport applications over the past few months.

At the end of April there were over 69,000 passport applications awaiting processing.  As of June 17, there were still approximately 68,000 passport applications in the backlog.

At that time, passports were taking 4 to 5 weeks to process.  Now there is a 10 working day passport guarantee is being offered to passport applicants.

Today, with just 25,000 passport applications in the system, Ireland’s passport processing bureau should be seen as an inspiration to other countries around the world that are experiencing a backlog of passport applications.

The number of passports being issued daily is in Ireland is approximately 3,200.  Each year, the Passport Office processes over 650,000 passport applications.

Passports No Longer Offered at California Agency

Friday, July 30th, 2010
Passport services in Yolo County, California will no longer be offered through the County Clerks office.  As a result, the Yolo County office will not act as a Passport Agent for the United States Department of State.  Clerk-Recorder Freddie Oakley announced that her office will not be able to handle US Passport applications or issue US Passports due to financial distress.
California Passport

In the past Yolo County provided passport information and issued passports, but since the federal government only reimburses them for only 50% of the cost of providing passport services, they lose about $25 for every passport processed.

Recorder, Freddie Oakley issued the following statement “In this time of financial crisis for the County, the Board of Supervisors and I agree that we can not continue to underwrite the federal government’s program. We really regret that this action is necessary, because we have always enjoyed working with our customers on passport applications.”

The Yolo County Clerk-Recorder’s Office was authorized to accept passport applications to people applying for US Passports for the first time, people who were minors when previous US Passports were issued, applicants who had their previous US Passports lost or stolen,  people who had their US Passports issued more than 15 years ago, minors aged 16 and 17 years old, as well as children 15 years of age or younger.

The remaining Passport Agents in Yolo County that are still processing passport applications are the Davis Post Office at 2020 5th St., Davis, and the West Sacramento Post Office at 3773 Industrial Blvd., West Sacramento.

Passport Initiative at Popular University Encourages Students to Get a Passport

Thursday, July 29th, 2010
Ohio State officials estimate that just 20% of the university’s 62,000 students have a US Passport. To help facilitate the passport process, officials from the National Passport Outreach Center in New Hampshire will process students' <a href=passport applications at a Study Abroad Expo at the Ohio Student Union on Oct. 7th, 2010.” width=”400″ height=”266″ />

In an earlier, Rush Passport™ blog entry, it was reported that U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk in his commencement speech at SMU this past spring urged students to “Get a passport!”

Now it seems that Ohio State University is following suit.  In an effort to better prepare students to become citizens of the world, OSU plans to double the number of students with passports.  The campaign starts this summer, and the initial focus is to encourage the more than 6,000 incoming freshmen to get passports.

Dolan Evanovich, Ohio State’s vice president made the following analogy: “The passport is really the driver’s license to the world.”

The passport initiative was first announced in March 2009 and among the steps towards encouraging every student to have a passport, is doubling the number of international undergraduates at Ohio State.

Ohio State officials estimate that just 20% of the university’s 62,000 students have a US Passport.  To help facilitate the passport process, officials from the National Passport Outreach Center in New Hampshire will process students’ passport applications at a Study Abroad Expo at the Ohio Student Union on Oct. 7th, 2010.

While the State Department received over 14 million passport applications in 2009, only about 30% of Americans have passports.

When asked why they did not have passports, some students blamed not getting passports on their cost.  Now, the cost will present even more of an issue as the passport application fee increased from $75 to $110 on July 13th, 2010.

Having a passport creates international opportunities for students.  Studying abroad widens students’ world views and provides an appreciation for other cultures, languages and perspectives.

You don’t have to be a student to get a passport.  Well, what are you waiting for?  If you are interested in getting a US Passport or US Passport Card, visit us at http://www.rushpassport.com or call us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to speak with a Live Passport Agent.  (877) 937-7277 (All 50 States) or (212) 643-9305 New York Passport Agency.

Passport Applications Provide a Wealth of Information

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

US Passport applications provide a wealth of information for genealogists.  Prior to 1941, with the exception of the early 1860’s during the Civil War and a few years after World War I ended in 1918, the law didn’t require U S. citizens to carry passports when traveling overseas. Nonetheless, many citizens still applied for and carried passports overseas anyway.

US Passport Application

The State Department issued over a million US Passports prior to 1925 and the original passport applications are housed at the National Archives in Washington, DC.

When the passport process was first put in place, the majority of the applicants were men.  If women traveled with their husbands, they were listed on the man’s application. The same applies to children as they were also described on the father’s application.

Original passport applications hold valuable genealogical information, including dates and places of birth, physical descriptions, and occupations. On some applications, the overseas destinations are listed as well.  Citizens also provided the date and state where they became citizens as well as the date and ship on which they first immigrated to the US.

Prior to 1914, the government did not require photographs and relied heavily on detailed physical descriptions.  Height, weight, hair and eye color, complexion, physical build and distinguishing features were all listed on the passport.

Today’s passports simply list the holder’s name, date and place of birth and gender.  A photograph has taken the place of the physical descriptors present in the original passports.  The US Passport contains a biometric chip that stores an image of the photograph of the passport holder, passport data, and personal data of the passport holder.

Rush Passport: Response to NY Times Article

Thursday, July 1st, 2010
Emergency Passport

Need to get a passport in a hurry?  You can do it yourself, but here’s some advice – don’t!  After reading this blog, you’ll understand why it’s much better to call Rush Passport™, Official US Passport Expeditors, Registered with the US Department of State and Foreign Consulates.

A recent article in the NY Times tells an all too familiar story.  Ms. Azlant and her boyfriend Mr. Duffy would much rather have been on a plane to Aruba, and they would have been if her passport had not expired five days earlier.  This happens to somebody everyday!

Instead of going to a passport expeditor, there the young Brooklyn couple were – sitting outside on the sidewalk in front of the New York Passport Agency at 376 Hudson Street.  There are 17 passport centers nationwide and the NYC location is the busiest of all, servicing upwards of 3,000 wannabe travelers each week. In all, including select post offices, there are over 9,000 locations around the U.S., that accept passport applications, but these 17 passport centers are for the most urgent passport situations.

This is where people go after finding out that they have a problem on the day that they are supposed to travel.  Common passport emergencies include families who get to the airport for an international flight only to find out that their children’s passports are expired.  Other examples are even more critical as people are in desperate need of a passport to visit a relative who has passed away or even worse – to pay last respects to someone dying overseas. Others have lost their passports or had them stolen.  And yet others come in from other states across the US because there are no passport offices that can help them where they live, so they figure they will give it a shot in New York City.

Just because you have spent hours waiting on the sidewalk doesn’t guarantee that you will be granted a passport.  The Passport Agency is very strict about which applicants are issued passports.  By 7:30 a.m., there is already a long line of anxious and hopeful passport applicants who get herded like cattle into a line by a security officer.  Passport applicants are then corralled into order based on appointment time followed by the emergency cases.

Then the passport hopefuls are handled with the warmth of a visit to Riker’s Island as they are reminded by a security guard that they are about to enter a federal building and that there are “No sharp objects. No pepper spray. No food or beverages. We can’t hold anything for anybody.”

It is not a pleasant atmosphere to be in, especially as tempers can flare up in a split second as people are so anxious to begin with.  Since applicants are not allowed to bring food into the building, some resort to strange solutions like stashing it in trash cans and others have even reported that there’s a candy store that will watch your lunch for $5.00.

They are then subjected to metal detectors and sent to wait indefinitely for an interview.  After this whole process, some people can get rejected for the tiniest glitch in their applications such as having passport photos that were taken from too far away, with improper lighting or for being not perfectly centered.

Does this process sound like fun yet?  I didn’t think so…

Passport House Calls?

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010
Passport Taiwanese

Later this year, in Taipei, designated household offices may accept passport applications. The ministry originally had planned to allow Taiwanese citizens to apply for passports at selected household registration offices around the country in early May, however the plans were delayed because of inadequate preparation and coordination between various agencies.

The household registration offices face the issues of inadequate manpower, lack of financial resources and unclear legal authority to handle passport applications.  Currently, Taiwanese citizens may only apply for passports at offices in the four cities of Taipei, Taichung, Hualien and Kaohsiung.

Taiwanese passport officials hope that by expanding the service to household registration offices, more citizens will be encouraged to apply for passports in person.  In addition, Taiwan is in the process of trying to convince the European Union, the United States, and Canada to offer Taiwanese nationals visa-waiver treatment.  Household registration offices could help Taiwan’s case by getting more nationals to handle the passport application process.

According to the sources, approximately 65 percent of all passport applicants in Taiwan are made through travel agencies, with approximately 35 percent of applicants applying on their own.The addition of the new household registration offices are expected to create in increase in the number of Taiwanese passport applications to be submitted in 2011.
