A Broward County, Florida man recently showed identification when he applied for his US passport, but he got arrested. It was his son’s identification. The man used his son’s identity to apply for the passport in order to flee the country to avoid being arrested for a crime that he allegedly committed in 1987. He pled guilty to passport fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Falsifying passport records is a federal offense that carries a minimum two year sentence in federal prison. Passport fraud is a potentially dangerous crime that allows criminals to escape prosecution. Passport fraud is a concern in every country that issues passports. Lost passports can be used to perpetrate passport fraud and passports can be stolen for the purpose of fraud. As a precaution, it is a great idea to always keep a photo copy of your passport so that you can show that passport copy to the consulate to expedite the return of your passport and your ability to travel abroad.

A passport is a very important travel document that is needed to verify the bearer’s nationality and identity. In order to enter and/ or leave the United States you must have a valid U.S. passport. When I say valid U.S. passport I mean one that is unexpired and that is in good condition, not worn or falling apart or one that the picture or any other part of it has been tampered with.
To obtain a U.S. passport you must follow the directions of the application very carefully to ensure that you don’t cause any delays in getting your new passport. You must fill out the passport application which is known as Form DS-11. This is a form that can be filled out online or can you print it out and then filled out. You must also provide proof of US citizenship in order to apply and get your U.S. Passport. Valid forms for proof of citizenship are a previous U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, naturalization certificate or a certificate of citizenship. Proof of identity is also necessary, such as a driver’s license, or another type of government id. You will also need to have your passport picture taken, and you must present two identical passport photos that are 2”X2”. It is important to follow the specific rules of the type of picture that required. The passport photo must show a full frontal view of your face, it must include the top your shoulders and the top of your head. The background of the passport photo must be plain white or off white.

How long does it take to get a passport? I have urgent travel plans and I don’t have a passport. What should I do? Generally speaking, the passport application process takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks and if there is a backlog, it can take as long as three months. However, there are methods to get your passport even quicker – even on the same day.
