An article appeared in the Huffington Post recently that stated that the author wasn’t surprised to find out how few Americans have passports. According to a previous Rush Passport™ blog entry the states with the highest rate of passport ownership include New Jersey, Alaska, Massachusetts, New York and California.
The author goes onto mention that the cost of the US passport is too high. The author states that a first-time passport or passport renewal both cost $140 for adults and $80 for minors. That comes out to $14 dollars per year for adults because the adult passport is valid for 10 years. And then the author states that it comes out to $8 per year for minors. In actually, a passport for a minor is only valid for 5 years, so the cost is slightly higher at $16 per year. It seems that the author thought that the passport for minors was good for 10 years as well.
I don’t think that $14 per year for a US passport is a lot of money. It certainly isn’t enough to dissuade a person for traveling overseas. What about airfares, baggage fees, hotel costs, dining and souvenirs? Now those are expenses! But to not get a passport because of the $14 annual fee – that seems ridiculous.
Imagine being willing to incur the other expenses attributed to traveling abroad, but not willing to spring for the passport. It seems ridiculous!

When is a US passport needed for travel?
A passport is needed each time that you leave the United States. However, a US passport card may be used for American citizens traveling by land or sea to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
Can a passport application be denied?
A passport application may be rejected. The most common reason for a passport being denied is due to missing documents. A passport application can also be denied for outstanding child support, outstanding criminal charges or convictions.
Do I need to get a new passport if I have changed my name?
If you need to change the name in your passport the next steps depend on how long you have had your current passport. If your passport is less than one year old and you need to change the name on the passport, use Form DS-5504. If your passport is more than one year old and you would like to change the name, you will need to apply for passport renewal. You must submit the original court document indicating the name change or original marriage certificate, along with the current passport.
What is a second passport?
A second passport can be requested by people who travel frequently. If you are unable to get a visa before a scheduled trip, you may be issued a second passport that will allow you to travel while waiting for the visa to arrive. Another reason to get a second passport applies to travelers who have Israeli stamps in their passport but who also need to travel to countries where evidence of travel to Israel will deny them entry.

US passport holders in Japan are getting some help from the US State Department. The US State Department began distributing potassium iodide at Tokyo’s New Sanno Hotel from 10:00am t0 5:00pm to all US citizens with valid US passports. US passport holders could obtain seven 130 mg pills. Passport holders who obtained the potassium iodide were required to sign a release holding the U.S. government “harmless for the provision of this medication.” The form US passport holders were asked to fill out also stated: “While no indication exists that it is currently advisable to take potassium iodide, the U.S. Government is making this medication available upon your request to use as advised if circumstances change.”
In the event of a nuclear radiation emergency, potassium iodide is given because it is a thyroid-blocking agent. US passport holders taking this medication are doing so at their own risk.
The US State Department is doing all that they can to help evacuate US passport holders from Japan. Those US citizens holding US passports who refuse to leave Japan are being offered the potassium iodide in an effort to minimize the effects of nuclear radiation.
This is just one example of the many benefits of being a valid US passport holder.

In recent passport news, it was reported that Taiwan wished to be considered eligible for visa-free entry to the United States. That would mean that Taiwan citizens with valid passports would be able to travel to the US without need for a visa. This new passport policy would go into effect in 2011. Taiwan is anxious to get this passport initiative into effect and passport officials have been putting all of the components together so that this passport resolution is passed. As part of the visa-waiver program requirements, Taiwan will agree to exchange information on stolen or counterfeit passports, on terrorists and will collaborate to fighting global crime.
Taiwan must satisfy the conditions mentioned above before the US would consider them for the visa-waiver program (VWP). Taiwan passport officials claim that there is a need for a visa-waiver program with the US due to the extensive flow of passport holders between Taiwan and the US. Taiwan was recently granted visa-free privileges in parts of Europe. Issues with granting Taiwan visa-free privileges include visa refusal rates, cases of overstay in the US and a passport application and issuance procedure that requires potential travelers to apply for passports and visas in person.
Taiwan is putting in place new procedures that will require visa applicants to complete their passport applications in person. This new passport application practice is scheduled to begin March 1, 2011. Taiwanese passport officials recently met with the US Department of Homeland Security in Washington, DC to discuss this new passport proposal. Currently 96 countries / regions across the globe grant Taiwanese passport holders visa exemptions.

Lost your passport? Did you need to get a new passport? Are you unsure of how to get a passport? Do you need to get your passport today? Do you need an emergency passport? Well, you’re not alone. In an effort to keep passports in a safe place, passport holders often put them in too safe a place and end up losing their passports altogether. Stolen passports are also possible, but passport theft usually occurs once a passport holder is traveling. People also lose their passports during travel.
In you recall a previous Rush Passport passport blog entry introduced our readers to Mexican soccer player, Carlos Vela. In April 2010, Vela lost his passport and ended up missing the biggest game of his career – after he was unable to travel to Barcelona for the Arsenal’s Champions League quarter-final soccer match. His team lost the match and now Vela actually takes his passport with him to bed!
The latest passport blunder came at the hands of another athlete, star cricket player Graeme Swann. Swann realized that his passport was lost right just 48 hours before departure for a big match in Australia.
Swann actually tweeted to his 78,000 Twitter followers “Are passports still absolutely required to travel overseas? If so then I fear today may be one of frantic searching.”
Twitter would not have been my first choice if I discovered that my passport was missing 48 hours before a scheduled flight abroad. I would’ve called Rush Passport™!
However, all turned out fine five hours later when Swann again turned to Twitter to add: “My passport turned up in my ‘safe’ place, down the back of my kitchen bin.”
Losing a passport is no fun! But, here’s some advice: Don’t go to Twitter – visit Rush Passport™.

Passport problems for a Berkshire family have left them devastated after they were forced to leave one of their family members behind. The family member is actually their pet dog, Indy. The pet was detained in France upon returning from a family vacation because his pet passport microchip failed.
The dog’s owner, Matt Roberts had his two dogs outfitted with surgically implanted passport microchips as part of the Pet Travel Scheme (“PETS”). The Pet Travel Scheme (“PETS”) refers to a system that permits animals to travel between member countries without undergoing quarantine. A Pet Passport is a travel document that officially records information related to a specific animal. The purpose of a pet passport is to speed up and simplify travel with animals between member countries.
PETS was originally established in the UK as a safeguard against rabies and as a way for animals to travel between countries without being quarantined. Many countries now also employ the PETS passport system including the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The poor dog, Indy needed to have surgery to remove the passport chip.
Hopefully, Indy’s identity will be confirmed – or it can take up to 6 months for the dog to be issued a new pet passport.
Mr Roberts has two dogs, Indy and Buzz. Buzz was allowed to re-enter the country, but the scanner could not read Indy’s passport microchip and Indy was detained in France.
The family had to have the passport microchip surgically removed from the dog and now they are waiting for the manufacturer to confirm that they passport chip is a match to the documentation on the pet passport.
Unfortunately, the vets who removed the passport chip feel that it may be corrupted and not sure that it will be able to be read.
Mr. Roberts may have no other choice than to reapply for a new pet passport for his dog.
It turns out that each year approximately 100 pets have passport microchip problems upon arrival to the UK. In the majority of those cases, the passport microchip number can be identified by the manufacturer, and the pet is eventually permitted to enter the country.

Saved!
September 2, 2010: Monday morning, four days prior to leaving for Costa Rica, I checked my passport and noticed that it expired January of this year. Although I travel frequently, it’s within the US., using my state license photo ID, not my passport. Government agencies could not help, giving me an appointment after my scheduled return.
Enter Rush Passport. Sofia, a member of the small, professional staff explained my alternatives and guided me every step of the way. Sofia, and the rest of the staff made what was a very difficult situation, disappear.
Sofia called early Wednesday to say my passport was ready, earlier then expected. I highly recommend this very professional organization.
James C Smith (Newark, NJ Metro)
Excellent Service, very fast turnaround
August 24th, 2010: I needed pages added to my passport for a foreign visa, brought my passport in on a Wednesday, picked it up on friday- even earlier than promised. I was assisted by Sarah, who was very helpful, and had me through the paperwork in a few minutes. Would definitely recommend them for any urgent passport services.
Jr730 (NYC)
Excellent Agency!!!
August 23rd, 2010: I cant believe a company this great really exists!!! I was leaving for Canada on a tues. I never had a passport before and just realized the previous friday that I needed one to travel to Canada. I didnt think there was any way I would be able to obtain a passport in 3 days but I decided to go online and search anyways. Rush Passport came up. I thought it was too good to be true, but the company is 100% legitimate. I went in on Sat morning and filled out all the paperwork with Damila, who was extremely friendly and helpful. By Monday evening, I had the passport in my hands. I really couldnt believe that I was able to get one that quickly!! This company is amazing!!!!
nb612 (New York, Metro)
Really fast passport turnaround
August 22nd, 2010: This company is amazing. The owner returned my call at 12:30 at night, told me what to bring to the office, and by 5 PM the next day I had a new passport. Definitely get there early. I showed up at 7 AM (they open at 730) and was just barely second in line. By 730, the line was about 10 people long.
