Passports Get Lost in the Mail: Rush Passport NYC

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

passport emergencyDid you know that US passports get lost in the mail?  Can you imagine finding someone else’s passport?  What would you do?  The US Department of State makes it very clear what you should do if you find a lost passport.  The US Department of State also makes it clear what you should do if your passport is lost.

If your passport is lost or stolen you should report it immediately!  If your passport is lost or stolen overseas, you need to contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate.  If your passport has been lost or stolen, you will have trouble traveling abroad until it is resolved and you may also face identity theft related problems.

If you need to report your lost of stolen US passport by Phone: call 1-877-487-2778
You can also report your passport as lost or stolen by filling out Form DS-64 and mailing the document to:

U.S. Department of State

Passport Services
Consular Lost/Stolen Passport Section
1111 19th Street, NW, Suite 500
Washington, DC 20036

If you find another person’s lost US passport, then you should mail it in a strong envelope to the same address listed above.

To get a replacement for your lost or stolen US passport, you must submit the following forms in person at a Passport Agency or Acceptance Facility:

•Form DS-11: Application for a U.S. Passport, and

•Form DS-64: Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport

It is important to know that passports that are reported lost or stolen by telephone or by submitting Form DS-64 become invalid and can no longer be used for travel.  So, if your passport is misplaced, be sure to look for the passport before reporting it lost or stolen.  If you do find the passport after you have reported it lost or stolen, you will not be able to use that passport for international travel.

If you recover the passport after you have reported it lost or stolen, then you should submit the passport to the address listed above.   The passport will be destroyed once it is received unless upon request, the passport can be cancelled and returned to you.

Once again, it is important to point out that once a passport is reported lost or stolen, it cannot be re-validated.
