There are people all over the world who have the privilege of holding passports from two different countries. While there are situations in which second passports are legal, there are some instances in which second passports are not permitted.
Recently, two newly elected members of the Israeli Knesset had to relinquish their foreign passports in order to accept their roles in the government. Dov Lipman and Naftali Bennett surrendered their U.S. passports following the protocol to become members of Israel’s Knesset.
Lipman held dual citizen and it was a difficult move to make as he was born and raised in the United States. For Lipman, while it was necessary, it wasn’t easy to give up his US passport. Lipman was emotional as he discussed the difficulty in surrendering his US passport.
For Bennett, although he was born in Israel, it was also difficult to give up his US passport. Both Bennett and Lipman are proud to be able to serve in the Knesset. However, they are both upset about being forced to give up their US passports.
Many Americans have ties to other countries, usually the countries from which they migrated to the United States. Whether they themselves came to America, their parents, or even their grandparents, there is a certain pride that lies with their countries of origin. Even those who have assimilated into American culture still hold a special place for the countries of their ancestors.
For Lipman and Bennett, America is that special place.

Get out your party hats, noisemakers and passports! The Department of State is celebrating Passport Day in the USA 2013 today March 9, 2013. Passport Day in the USA is a national passport acceptance and outreach event. Did you know that all United States citizens are required to present a valid passport book when entering or re-entering the United States by air. US citizens entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda at land borders and sea ports of entry are required to present a passport book, passport card, or other travel documents approved by the US government.
Passport Day in the USA is an outreach program to encourage US citizens to get their passports. Many Americans wait until the last minute to get their passports and sometimes do not get their passports in time. Sometimes, people do get their passports in time, but go through plenty of stress in the process. The US Department of State created Passport Day in the USA as a way to make it easier and more convenient for people to get their US passports. Several Americans take advantage of Passport Day in the USA to finally go get their passports.
If you are interested in celebrating Passport Day in the USA by getting a passport or visa, give us a call at (212) 643-9305. As a US citizen it is your right to get a US passport. Currently, the US would like to present an award for courage to a Tibetan author, but the activist will not able to travel to receive the award because is being denied her passport by Chinese authorities.
Tsering Woeser is one of 10 women named for the International Women’s Day honor in Washington DC. She has been documenting the efforts of Tibetans who have made the ultimate sacrifice by dousing themselves with kerosene and setting themselves on fire in protest against Beijing’s rule.
The U.S. State Department feels that Woeser’s website that exposes the atrocities has brought awareness to this terrible problem. This is the reason why Woeser has been recognized as a recipient of this prestigious award.
It is important to know that you live in a country where you can get a passport and are free to travel to many countries around the globe. Can you imagine if it were much more difficult for Americans to get passports to leave the country? As it is only 1/3 of Americans even have a US passport. It is somewhat curious that 2/3 of Americans still do not have their passports. Perhaps the right to get a US passport is something that some Americans take for granted.

Do you have a US Passport? Well, pretty soon there will be one less US citizen in the United States and one less US passport. You just might be asking yourself “What’s love got to do with it?”. That’s right, Tina Turner is going to turn in her US passport to become a Swiss citizen.
Turner has been living in Switzerland since 1995. After living in Kuesnacht, a Zurich suburb for nearly 20 years, the iconic singer is waiting for approval from the Swiss state before being granted Swiss citizenship and issued the red passport.
Turner will also give up her US citizenship and turn in her US passport. Some celebrities turn in their US passports for financial reasons to avoid paying taxes to the US government. Turner’s representatives have said that Turner is trading her US passport for a Swiss passport because she loves living in Switzerland.
Turner who has lived in Switzerland has more than singing in common with Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Phil Collins who also have homes in Switzerland.
Are you thinking about getting a US passport? Whether or not you want to trade in your Swiss passport for a US passport or if you are applying for a first time US passport, the passport experts at Rush Passport™ can help.
