In 1938 a spacecraft crash landed in Kansas. The aircraft contained an infant. That infant grew up to become a symbol that is as American as baseball and apple pie and the US passport. This is of course the story of fiction and the character is Superman. Superman is a representation of America and has been since 1938. However, that is all about to change. It has been reported that DC Comics plans to go in a different direction as Superman will renounce his American citizenship and give up his US passport.
Action Comics #900 is the comic book issue in which the Man of Steel will give up his passport. No, he’s not giving up his passport to avoid paying taxes. He is giving up his passport in an effort to work on a more global scale.
Who knows if this is a ploy to get more readers or if it is a critical statement against America, but I wonder if Superman will still be required to show his US passport at border crossings? Actually, since he is traveling by air a US passport card would not be sufficient, he would need to have a US passport booklet.
And come to think of it, what about Clark Kent? Will he give up his passport too? Where will he live? How will he leave the country without his passport and how will he return if he changes his mind?
Even though this is purely fictitious, it is still interesting to see how DC Comics handles Clark Kent’s passport. I wonder if Superman actually needs a passport anyway.

Do I need a new passport if I don’t look like the person in the passport photo anymore? Passport photos don’t always do the passport holder justice. But, there are times when the passport doesn’t look anything like the passport holder. I’m not talking about fake passports, I’m talking about a person whose passport photo doesn’t look like them at all. The adult US passport is valid for ten years. A lot can happen to a person’s appearance in ten years that can make their passport photo unrecognizable.
The most common change that a person can undergo in ten years is to their hair. Hair can turn gray, it can be dyed different colors or it can fall out completely. A person can grow or shave off facial hair. But, for the most part, it may be unlikely that hair would change so much that the passport holder would be detained due to concerns that the passport is not theirs.
However, a person’s weight may fluctuate in ten years to the point where they may be unrecognizable with regard to their passport photo and their appearance in person. People may experience such a drastic weight gain or weight loss in ten years that they look nothing like their passport photos.
A person’s passport may not be accepted for travel by border officials if their appearance has changed to the point at which they cannot be identified from the photo in their passport. If this is the case, the person should apply for a new passport, even if the old passport has not yet expired yet.
In addition to changes to hair and weight, there are other instances in which a person may need to apply for a new passport due to concerns over the passport photo matching their appearance. Anyone who has undergone significant facial cosmetic plastic surgery or trauma to the face may need to apply for a new passport. A person with added or removed facial piercings or tattoos may also need to apply for a new passport. Another reason that a person may need to apply for a new passport is if they have undergone a transgender procedure.
Last, but not least, a child may get an adult passport at age 16 and may have aged so drastically before the 10 years of the passport’s validity is up that they need to apply for a new passport.
If you feel that you are unrecognizable from your passport photo, you can apply for a new passport. If you think that you can still be identified from your passport photo, then you do not need to apply for a new passport.
If you feel that you need a new passport because your appearance has changed to the point that you are unrecognizable in comparison to your passport photo, contact Rush Passport™.

Should people who owe money to the IRS be allowed to renew passports? It is an interesting question. The IRS and the US Dept of State are both government agencies, but does that give them the right to deny passports to people who owe money on their taxes? It turns out that this is not an isolated issue where just a few people owe money on taxes. It seems that of the approximately quarter of a million people who received a passport in 2008, they owed a total of almost $6 billion to the IRS in federal income taxes.
Currently, people who owe money on taxes are allowed to get a new passport and renew their expired passports. However, Congress is considering a change to the law that would allow the US Department of State to deny passports to people with outstanding balances to the IRS.
The State Department does not have access to IRS records, however the State Department can deny the issuance of a passport to an individual based on child support debts totaling over $2,500. In addition, the US State Department can deny a passport if the passport applicant has an outstanding felony warrant.
Some feel that it is disturbing for people who owe millions of dollars in taxes are allowed to be issued passports and that they are able to travel in and out of the US at will. Others feel that taxpayer privacy and freedom are paramount and that their passports should not be revoked.
Strangely enough, a passport applicant cannot be compelled to provide their social security number to apply for a US passport. This being the case, the State Department records would not have a social security number on file to compare with the IRS records.
At this time tax evaders can still apply for a passport, but that may all be changing soon. So, if you are a tax evader you should renew that old passport or if you need to apply for a first time passport, it would be a good time to process that application before the laws change.

Can I still get a passport? What could the government shutdown mean to you if you are one of the people who need to get a passport? After all, April 9th, 2011 is slated to be the 3rd Annual Passport Day in the USA. However, if there is a government shutdown, you can kiss that passport event goodbye.
The US government shutdown of 1995 and 1996 was primarily caused by a conflict between President Clinton and the Republican-controlled Congress over funding for Medicare. This time around, it seems that a dispute over family planning is what threatens the shutdown. The government shutdown of 1995 -1996 took place from November 14 through November 19, 1995 and from December 16, 1995 to January 6, 1996.
During the shutdown, ‘non-essential’ government agencies are closed and employees are told not to come into work. Passport services fall into the category of ‘non-essential’. Tell that to someone who needs to get an emergency passport to see an ill loved one.
During the last shutdown major federal government agencies became inoperative including passport services. In addition to passport services, other sectors including health and welfare and national parks were affected. Hundreds of thousands of passport applications and applications for visas went unprocessed.
Hopefully, the government shutdown will be avoided and passport services will not be interrupted. To find out the latest on passport services, you can call Rush Passport™ at (877) 937-7277 (All 50 States) or NY Passport Office (212) 643-9305.

Passports will be falling from the sky on Saturday, April 9th. Well, not exactly – but the US Department of State has announced the 3rd Annual “Passport Day in the USA.” Event. Passport Day in the USA is a time for US citizens across the country to apply for a US passport book or US passport card. The April 9th passport event comes just in time for travelers to get their passports in time for summer.
The passport event is aimed at promoting the importance of getting a passport. Currently just 30% of US citizens hold valid passports. Passport Day in the USA is aimed at the other 70% who do not yet have a passport book or passport card.
It is important to remember that adult passports are valid for 10 years and child passports for minors under 16 years old are valid for a period of 5 years. When applying for a child passport, both parents and the child need to appear in person. If one parent is not able to appear, then that parent must submit a notarized “Minor Consent” form along with the passport application.
So, if you still don’t have your passport, if your passport is expired or if your passport was lost or stolen, now is the perfect time to come out and take care of all of your passport needs.
If you need an expedited passport, emergency passport, same day passport, US Passport book, US Passport Card, passport photos or other passport services, be sure to contact Rush Passport™. US passport holders in Japan are getting some help from the US State Department. The US State Department began distributing potassium iodide at Tokyo’s New Sanno Hotel from 10:00am t0 5:00pm to all US citizens with valid US passports. US passport holders could obtain seven 130 mg pills. Passport holders who obtained the potassium iodide were required to sign a release holding the U.S. government “harmless for the provision of this medication.” The form US passport holders were asked to fill out also stated: “While no indication exists that it is currently advisable to take potassium iodide, the U.S. Government is making this medication available upon your request to use as advised if circumstances change.”
In the event of a nuclear radiation emergency, potassium iodide is given because it is a thyroid-blocking agent. US passport holders taking this medication are doing so at their own risk.
The US State Department is doing all that they can to help evacuate US passport holders from Japan. Those US citizens holding US passports who refuse to leave Japan are being offered the potassium iodide in an effort to minimize the effects of nuclear radiation.
This is just one example of the many benefits of being a valid US passport holder.
