passport-vacationDo you need a US passport to travel to Puerto Rico?  Do you need a US passport to travel to the US Virgin Islands?  While US passports are required by US regulations for virtually all travel outside the US, passports are not needed for travel to Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.

Do you need a US passport to travel to Canada?  Do you need a US passport to travel to Mexico?  Do you need a US passport to travel to the Caribbean?  Do you need a US passport to travel to Bermuda?  Do you need a US passport to travel to the Bahamas?

I am taking a cruise that will depart and arrive at the same US port.  Do I need a passport?  While a passport is recommended, it is also acceptable to use both a valid government-issued photo identification and proof of citizenship.  Typically, if you do not have a passport you can use a driver’s license and a birth certificate.  However, this only applies to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Bermuda.  But, who wants to travel with the birth certificate?  A passport is a much easier solution.  Even simpler than the traditional US passport booklet is the US passport card.  The US passport card is a lower-cost alternative to the traditional passport booklet.  It is important to note that the US passport card is only valid for entry to the US by land or sea.  US passport cards are not valid for air travel/

The general rule of thumb is that all US citizens traveling beyond the United States by air, land or sea must have a valid US passport.
