Your Passport May Not Be Enough to Travel Abroad. Do You Need a Visa too? Rush Passport Blog

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

visa nyWant to travel abroad?  Getting a passport may not be enough.  Did you know that US citizens need something more than a passport to travel to Brazil, China and India?  All of these countries not only require a US passport, but they also require American travelers to get a visa before visiting.

Most US citizens are not even aware of what a visa is.  Many US citizens think that all they need is a passport.  However, many US citizens have experienced a rude awakening upon landing in Brazil and being sent back to the US without even being able to leave the airport.

A visa is a travel document that is required by some nations in addition to a US passport.  Visas are also needed for travel from the US to Vietnam, Cambodia, Nigeria, Russia and Australia.

Can you imagine all of the preparation that goes into a trip abroad only to find out once you have arrived that you are not allowed to enter the country because you don’t have a visa?  Then think about how you would feel if you were sent right back to the United States immediately after getting off the plane.

Some visas can take several weeks to process.  Other countries offer passport holders immediate approval.  Some countries even let US passport holders apply for visas upons arrival.

This does not mean that every country requires US passport holders to have a visa.  In actuality for most countries a US passport by itself is just fine.

The main reason that some countries require visas and some do not is generally due to money.  Wealthier countries tend to require travelers from poorer nations to get a visa.  Another reason that some countries require visas is due to politics.  Brazil requires a visa from US passport holders as retaliation for the US requirement for Brazilian’s to get a visa to travel to America.

It is best to apply for a visa one month prior to your trip, but unfortunately that is not always possible.  If you need a visa for travel and your trip is less than a month away, it is a good idea to contact Rush Passport™, Official Passport and Visa Expeditors Registered with the US Dept of State and Foreign Consulates.

Reasons to Visit Cambodia and Vietnam

Here are the Top 10 Reasons to Get Your Passport and Visit Cambodia and Vietnam:

1. Flights are cheap!

Deals can be had on Air Asia for $299 and up!  Shop around as there are plenty of cheap fares around!

2. Accomodations are cheap!
Vietnam and Cambodias high-end hotels have lowered their rates dramatically to under $100 per night and if you are willing to stay at a mid-range hotel, deals can be had for as little as $10 per night!

3. Food is cheap!
You can eat an entire meal purchased from the street vendors for less than a dollar! (I don’t know which is more dangerous, this or the motorcycle…)  If you prefer to sit down, most restaurants charge $2-3 for a meal.  Hey, you only live once (that’s debatable in some parts of Vietnam and Cambodia) so you might as well spring for the $30 all-you-can-eat buffets (wine included too).
With several international air routes to Vietnam, visitors can travel to Vietnam and then either fly or travel by road or water to Cambodia and then return to Vietnam to head home.

4. Transportation is cheap!
The average taxi ride in Vietnam and Cambodia cost around a buck!  Or if you want to live like a rockstar, just hire your own car with personal chauffeur for around $50 a day.  Motorbikes go for about $8 per day, but may not be the safest method of transportation.

5. Drinking is cheap!
Speaking of wine, you can expect to pay $4 a glass and beer goes for around $1 – $2 per bottle.   For a true bargain, look for a “bia hoi”  where you can expect to pay just 25c for fresh draught beer!

6. Shopping is cheap!
US Travelers will love the bargains on clothing, shoes, luggage and jewelery. Be ready to haggle, but take caution when buying counterfeit DVDs.  They have been known to be confiscated at customs.

7. Tailormade Suits are cheap!
Tailormade suits, dresses and coats can be yours for as little as $50.  If you need it quick, Hoi An is the best choice for rapid tailoring.  Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have better quality, but the wait will be longer.

8. Communication is cheap!
Don’t worry about staying in touch with friends and family as the majority of hotels have free internet.  If not, there are internet cafes in even remote villages. As for phonecalls, bring your own cell phone and buy a SIM card for 5 bucks or just buy a cell phone for $40, pay 20c per minute for International calls and then resell it before you leave.

9. Relaxing is cheap!
Temperatures in Vietnam and Cambodia can get high which can cause stress to elevate.  Don’t worry, they also have plenty of spas, massage parlors and health clubs where you can cool off and relax in comfort. Treat yourself to a full massage for as little as $6 an hour or splurge by going to a luxury hotel where spa and massage packages start at $35.

10. Plastic Surgery is cheap! (Just Kidding)
When opting for plastic surgery, cheap is not the way to go.  Besides, Vietnam and Cambodia are not particularly known for cosmetic surgery.  So skip it.  Instead, treat yourself to a trip to the hairdresser, beautician and nail salon.  A full hair wash and massage session will run you just 1 buck or get an entirely new hairdo for just $3.

To make things even easier, a proposal for a single visa for Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam is currently being considered.
