Not every U.S. citizen is a well seasoned traveler that knows everything they need to know in order to travel outside the US. That is perfectly fine as there is a large majority of American’s who have never traveled outside the U.S. and currently don’t have a passport. As silly as it may sound, they may find themselves wondering what a passport is.
A passport is a travel document that is normally required to travel from one country to another. A U.S. Passport comes in the form of a small booklet. A passport serves many functions; the obvious is that it allows you to travel to different countries, U.S. passport holders may travel to several other countries without needing further documentation. A passport also serves as proof of citizenship. A person holding a valid U.S. passport is internationally considered a U.S. citizen.
Another form or identification that can be used for traveling to another country is a passport card. Passport cards were first available in the summer of 2008. A passport card is a wallet sized, much like a driver’s license, which can be used to travel from the US to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land and sea only. The passport card is most convenient for US citizens who live close to the US border with Mexico or Canada and who travel frequently between these two countries, by land or sea. Passport cards may never be used for air travel.
A question that even a US Passport holder may ask themselves is; how long is a US passport valid for? The answer depends on the Passport holder’s age. An adult US passport for individuals 16 and older is valid for 10 years. Children 15 and under must renew their passports every 5 years.

Do you have a passport? If you do, that’s great. But if you don’t have a passport yet, why not? Did you ever think about traveling overseas? Did you ever wonder what it would be like to take a trip abroad? Did you know that even if you want to travel to Canada or to Mexico that your regular driver’s license won’t work? You can use your US passport, but there is something else that you can use to travel to Canada or Mexico. It’s called a Passport Card.
The US Passport Card is a less expensive and more portable way to travel. While the US passport card does not have all of the benefits of the traditional passport book, the passport still allows US citizens an alternative to the US passport. The US passport card allows citizens of the United States to enter or re-enter the United States from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
If you are planning a trip to Cancun, Nova Scotia, a cruise to the Caribbean or a flight to Bermuda, be sure to apply for your US passport or your US passport card.
If you are traveling abroad anytime within the next two weeks and you still don’t have your passport or passport card, don’t wait any longer, call us today.

Do you know the difference between a passport booklet and a passport card?
US Passport Booklets
A U.S. Passport is a very important travel document. The passport booklet is necessary to travel to countries outside the US. The US passports comes in the form of a small 32 page booklet. The US passport is also available in a 52 page version. The US passport serves many functions. The most obvious function is to make it possible to for Americans to travel abroad. US Passports don’t automatically grant American citizens entry into any country, but with a U.S. Passport a person is able to travel to many countries without requiring further documentation. A US passport can also be used to act as proof of citizenship. US passport holders are recognized internationally as United States citizens.
Adult U.S. passports are for US citizens age 16 years or older. Adult US passports are valid for a period of 10 years. US child passports are available for children under the age of 16 and are valid for a period of five years. US passport booklets can be used for air, land or sea travel.
US Passport Cards
US Passport cards are an alternate form of a U.S. Passport. The US Passport card was introduced in July of 2008. Passport cards are walled sized. US passport card are very similar to a standard driver’s license or state ID card. US passport cards are travel documents that can be used to travel from the US to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea. US Passport cards are not valid for those traveling by air. Passport Cards offer a more convenient alternative to traditional US Passport booklets for American citizens that near the US border with Mexico or Canada.
US Passport cards cannot be used for air travel or for international travel with the exceptions of Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean.

Get Your Passport Before the Rates Increase
Don’t miss out on all the fun!
Top events in 2010 include:
1) Riding with the Australian Cowboys in the Great Australian Outback Cattle Drive
2) Going on a Safari during the Annual Kalahari Bushmen’s initiation hunt in Botswana, Africa
3) Witnessing the Total Solar Eclipse from the remote Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island
4) Partying it up at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
5) Taking a ride on the luxurious Maharajas’ Express, India’s newest, highly anticipated super train
6) Getting into all of the excitement at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa
If you plan to partake in any of these events or any others, here’s some advice: Get your passports now! Why? Later this year, the State Department may be increasing their rates to $135 for adults who wish to obtain a first-time passport. For travelers under 16 years of age, the cost of a passport could go up to $105. Passport renewal is expected to jump to $110. Also, more and more American travelers are discovering that places (Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda) that previously did not require passports by land or sea, require them now. Passports were already required for returns through United States airports.
Even if you missed “Passport Day in the USA” on March 27, it is not too late to take advantage of the rates before they increase.

Passport or Passport Card?
Should you get a passport or a passport card? With a passport card, you are only permitted to return by land or sea only from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and Bermuda. They are not valid for air travel or other foreign destinations. Our advice: Get a passport because it is more versatile and like the card is good for 10 years.
