Are Passport Fees Going to Get Lowered? : Rush Passport NYC

Sunday, June 12th, 2011

Passport fees too expensive?  Do you think that passports cost too much money?  Two members of congress from NY have a plan to make passports more affordable.  Democrats Brian Higgins and Kathy Hochul represent districts near the US – Canada border where thousands of passport holders travel cross each day.

Passport Fees LowerTheir constituents not only want the passport fees to be lower, but they need passports now more than ever before due to the stricter requirements for travelers wishing to cross the US – Canada border.

The plan to lower the cost of passports may carry some weight since both Higgins and Hochul server on the Homeland Security Committee.

An adult passport currently costs $110 + $25 processing fee.  The adult passport is good for 10 years.  The cost is approximately $13 per year.  Proponents think that by lowering the cost of getting a passport more people will apply for passports.  Others think that passport fees are already low enough.  New technology and security measures have made the cost of producing a US passport rise.  By lowering the cost of the passport, the passports would actually cost the US Department of State money.

My Passport is Expired or My Passport is Expiring Soon. What Should I Do? : Rush Passport Blog

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

passport expiredDid you know that adult US Passports are valid for 10 years?  Child passports are good for 5 years.  Is your US passport getting close to the 10 year mark?  If so, it is a good idea to apply for a passport renewal before your passport expires.  If you have an expired passport, you can always get a new passport.  However, it is advisable to get a new passport before the passport expires.  Right now, if I were you, I would immediately stop reading this passport blog article.  Go get your passport, open your passport up and check your passport to see when your passport expires.  It is a good idea to have a valid passport at all times.  You never know when you might need to travel overseas. In the past a passport was not needed to travel to Canada or Mexico.  However, a passport is now required to travel back and forth from the US to all other countries including Mexico and Canada.  A valid US passport gives you the flexibility to travel whenever needed.

It is best to find your old passport (if possible) when attempting to renew an expired passport.  At the time of the passport renewal, it is a good idea to hand in the expired passport.  The old passport will be returned along with the new passport.

When applying for a passport renewal, you will also require new passport photos.  You will need two copies of the passport photograph to be attached to your passport application. At Rush Passport™ , we feature professional passport photo services on the premises.

When renewing your passport, it is advisable to get a US passport card while you’re at it.  A passport card in addition to the passport book is of high value, especially to travelers planning to visit Canada, Mexico or the Bahamas.

If you need a US passport card or other passport services such as an expedited passport, emergency passport, same day passport, US Passport book or passport photos be sure to contact Rush Passport™. Should Passport Privileges Be Awarded to Citizens Who Owe Money in Taxes?

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Ali-Hasan-Khan passportA recent Rush Passport™ blog entry spoke about US citizens who owe millions of dollars in back taxes to the IRS and their passports are still valid.  Many US Citizens feel that anyone who owes money to the IRS should not be issued valid passports until their balances are cleared.  Other US citizens feel that the US Department of State should not interfere with the right for a citizen to get a passport regardless of whether or not they owe money to the IRS.

As this debate rolls along, it seems that the US is not the only country that has troubles with people who owes millions in back taxes and can still apply for, receive and new passport.

In New Delhi, Lieutenant Governor Iqbal Singh has admitted that he had recommended that Hasan Ali Khan’s passport be expedited on humanitarian grounds.  Even though Khan faces charges of tax evasion and money laundering, Singh reportedly used his policital power to order Khan’s passport applicantion to be expedited even though Khan owes the government millions of dollars.

It seems that this passport problem is a global one.  Citizens want to have the privilege of owning a passport, regardless of whether or not they owe back taxes. Proponents feel that this withholding a person’s passport based on money owed may provide another economic stimulus to the company.

Do I Need a New Passport if My Appearance Has Changed to the Point that I am Unrecognizable?

Sunday, April 17th, 2011

passport photoDo I need a new passport if I don’t look like the person in the passport photo anymore?  Passport photos don’t always do the passport holder justice.  But, there are times when the passport doesn’t look anything like the passport holder.  I’m not talking about fake passports, I’m talking about a person whose passport photo doesn’t look like them at all.  The adult US passport is valid for ten years.  A lot can happen to a person’s appearance in ten years that can make their passport photo unrecognizable.

The most common change that a person can undergo in ten years is to their hair.  Hair can turn gray, it can be dyed different colors or it can fall out completely.  A person can grow or shave off facial hair.  But, for the most part, it may be unlikely that hair would change so much that the passport holder would be detained due to concerns that the passport is not theirs.

However, a person’s weight may fluctuate in ten years to the point where they may be unrecognizable with regard to their passport photo and their appearance in person.  People may experience such a drastic weight gain or weight loss in ten years that they look nothing like their passport photos.

A person’s passport may not be accepted for travel by border officials if their appearance has changed to the point at which they cannot be identified from the photo in their passport.   If this is the case, the person should apply for a new passport, even if the old passport has not yet expired yet.

In addition to changes to hair and weight, there are other instances in which a person may need to apply for a new passport due to concerns over the passport photo matching their appearance.  Anyone who has undergone significant facial cosmetic plastic surgery or trauma to the face may need to apply for a new passport.  A person with added or removed facial piercings or tattoos may also need to apply for a new passport.  Another reason that a person may need to apply for a new passport is if they have undergone a transgender procedure.

Last, but not least, a child may get an adult passport at age 16 and may have aged so drastically before the 10 years of the passport’s validity is up that they need to apply for a new passport.

If you feel that you are unrecognizable from your passport photo, you can apply for a new passport.  If you think that you can still be identified from your passport photo, then you do not need to apply for a new passport.

If you feel that you need a new passport because your appearance has changed to the point that you are unrecognizable in comparison to your passport photo, contact Rush Passport™.

If you need passport photos or other passport services such as an expedited passport, emergency passport, same day passport, US Passport book, US Passport Card, be sure to contact Rush Passport™. How to Take a Baby / Infant / Child Passport Photo: Rush Passport

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

baby passport photoIt is important to follow the rules of passport photos when attempting to take your own passport photos for the passport application.  Taking passport photos of an adult is a much different process than taking a passport photo of a baby or toddler.

When taking a passport photo of a baby or toddler, it is important to be sure that there is nobody else in the photo.  The child must be looking at the camera with his/her eyes open for the passport photo to be acceptable.

Here is a tip on how to take an acceptable passport photo of your baby.  It is a good idea to lay your baby on his / her back on a plain white sheet.  This will help to ensure that the baby’s head is supported and will give you the best chance of satisfying the passport photo requirements.

Another good idea involves covering a car seat with a plain white sheet.  Place the child into the car seat and then take the passport photo.

The passport photo must be printed in color on photo quality paper.  It must be precisely 2 inches by 2 inches.

The best way to ensure that you get an acceptable passport photo is to have a passport photo specialist take the baby’s passport photo for you.  At Rush Passport™ our passport photo professionals can take a professional passport photo of your child that is certain to be accepted by the US Dept of State.

Passport Day in the USA is Almost Here: April 9th, 2011

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Passports will be falling from the sky on Saturday, April 9th.  Well, not exactly – but the US Department of State has announced the 3rd Annual “Passport Day in the USA.” Event.  Passport Day in the USA is a time for US citizens across the country to apply for a US passport book or US passport card.  The April 9th passport event comes just in time for travelers to get their passports in time for summer.

get a US passportThe passport event is aimed at promoting the importance of getting a passport.  Currently just 30% of US citizens hold valid passports.  Passport Day in the USA is aimed at the other 70% who do not yet have a passport book or passport card.

It is important to remember that adult passports are valid for 10 years and child passports for minors under 16 years old are valid for a period of 5 years.  When applying for a child passport, both parents and the child need to appear in person.  If one parent is not able to appear, then that parent must submit a notarized “Minor Consent” form along with the passport application.

So, if you still don’t have your passport, if your passport is expired or if your passport was lost or stolen, now is the perfect time to come out and take care of all of your passport needs.
