US Passports are necessary for travel to Canada. Did you know that New Yorkers have four border crossings into Canada? New Yorkers frequently cross over into Canada using their US passports. They also produce their US passports upon returning to the US from Canada. However, some New Yorkers feels that the cost of a US passport is preventing them from getting a passport.
Their sentiments have began to pick up some steam as US Representative Kathy Hochul, a Democrat from the 26th District in New York along with US Representative Brian Higgins, also a Democrat, but from New York’s 27th District have introduced new legislation to lower the cost of getting a US passport.
The US Democratic Representatives feel that people who live in western New York are being charged so much for a passport that the cost has become prohibitive. They feel that the federal government should not be profiting from the US passport industry and that instead this should be provided as a service to US citizens in which the government breaks even.
The new passport proposal, Passport Fee Relief Act, passport holders would receive a refundable tax credit which would in essence be like getting reimbursed for the passport application fee of up to $140.
Another proposed passport bill is called the Passport Acquisition Savings and Security (PASS) Act. Under this proposal, the US State Department would only be permitted to set the passport fee at the actual cost of providing a passport.
If these passport proposals are put into effect, it would not only affect passport applicants in New York, but all across the United States. In order for the passport legislation to pass, it will need support from members of congress throughout the US.

Passport fees too expensive? Do you think that passports cost too much money? Two members of congress from NY have a plan to make passports more affordable. Democrats Brian Higgins and Kathy Hochul represent districts near the US – Canada border where thousands of passport holders travel cross each day.
Their constituents not only want the passport fees to be lower, but they need passports now more than ever before due to the stricter requirements for travelers wishing to cross the US – Canada border.
The plan to lower the cost of passports may carry some weight since both Higgins and Hochul server on the Homeland Security Committee.
An adult passport currently costs $110 + $25 processing fee. The adult passport is good for 10 years. The cost is approximately $13 per year. Proponents think that by lowering the cost of getting a passport more people will apply for passports. Others think that passport fees are already low enough. New technology and security measures have made the cost of producing a US passport rise. By lowering the cost of the passport, the passports would actually cost the US Department of State money.

Passport security is at the forefront of a new initiative set forth by Interpol. Commercial airlines across the globe are being urged by Interpol to put into effect a passport database that will identify travelers attempting to use fraudulent or stolen passports.
The passport database would work well to prevent passengers from using stolen or fraudulent passports, but airlines are not willing to release passenger information. Interpol asserts that this must be done to prevent terrorist attacks.
Currently, hundreds of thousands of passengers are able to travel internationally with their passports going unchecked.
A passport database would greatly help to prevent terrorism. The passport database would integrate passport data from all over the world. The passport database would keep track of stolen passports and check passports of potential airline passengers.
While airlines are not all on board with the passport database, El Al Israel Airlines president Elyezer Shkedy supports Interpol’s passport database proposal.
Let’s hope that the airlines come together and the passport database becomes a reality in the near future.

1. What is a US passport?
A US passport is a travel document in the form of a small book or identification card (as is the case in the US passport card). A US passport gives a person the right to travel outside of the borders of the US. It is important to keep in mind that a US passport does guarantee that the passport holder will have the right to enter any country. A US passport can also be used as proof of citizenship.
2. What is a passport card?
The US passport card has been available since July 14, 2008. A US passport card is a wallet-sized travel document. It does not have the same capabilities as a US passport booklet. A US passport card can only be used to travel from the United States to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land and sea but not air.
3. How long is a US passport valid for?
An adult US passport for people ages 16 and over is valid for 10 years. A child passport for people ages 15 and under is valid for 5 years. An emergency passport is valid for 1 year and when replacing a lost passport, the US Dept of State may issue the new passport for 1-2 years of validity.
4. When do I need a US passport?
A US passport is required each time that a person leaves or returns to the United States or its territories. A US passport card may be used for American citizens traveling by land or sea to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.
