Passport Needed for Travel to Arizona for US Residents of Certain States

US Passports – is it true that they are really needed for travel to Arizona?  Yes, residents of certain states in The United States of America planning on traveling to Arizona should be

aware that their regular state-issued driver’s licenses will not satisfy Arizona’s new requirements for identification.  It is strongly suggested that they carry their US Passports with them.

Residents of the states of Washington, New Mexico and Hawaii do not require proof of legal residency to obtain a driver’s license.  Proof of residency is something that the new Arizona immigration law SB1070 requires.  There is an exception to residents of Washington who have received the new enhanced driver license (EDL) that works like a US Passport Card and can be used in place of a passport to cross land and sea borders between the U.S. and Canada and the U.S. and Mexico.  The EDLs require proof of U.S. citizenship and therefore are not subject to the jurisdiction of SB1070.

Under the new law, the US citizens who fall into the category mentioned above would be required to produce a valid US Passport for travel within the state of Arizona.  The law also says that police officers must demand proof of residency of people they suspect of being in the U.S. illegally.

Under the Arizona law SB1070, people who look ‘foreign’ are more likely to be stopped and then asked to produce proof of citizenship.  This can happen if police believe, just by looking at them, that they could be in the country unlawfully.

It is advised that as of July 29, when the law goes into effect, those visitors take along a US Passport.
